“THE POTENTIAL OF (SOLANUM TUBEROSOM) POTATO, SOAP,

PALM OIL

AND COAL: ALTERNATIVE SHOE POLISHER”

1.0 Introduction

Rationale

Shining a shoe with shoe polish is a simple and effective way of extending the life

and preserving it’s natural appearance. Shoe polish ( or boot polish) is a waxy paste,

cream, or liquid use to polish, shine and waterproof proof leather shoes, or boots to extend

the foot wears life and restore, maintain and improve their appearance. One of the

components of potato is the potassium. Potassium has the highest capacity to be a shoe

polish cream/wax. It has the ability to shine, to maintain appearance and to sustain the

quality of the shoes. Potassium is capable to act as a polish in terms of effectiveness

using the acceptability. Potato is a very effective as shoe polish since potato contains a

key ingredients found in commercial shoe polishes-potassium. Usually humans only

consider Solanum tuberosom (Potato) as a vegetables that we can eat and use

ingredients in different kinds of dish not knowing that it has another purpose or usage. It

possesses component of Solanum tuberosom (Potato) that contains alkali metals

specifically potassium there are many advocacies promoting environment preservation

and restoration. This may help in this advocacies. Because the main ingredients which is

the potato fruit so that it will lessen the production of biodegradable garbage, and also,

the product will cause lesser than the commercial because only the tools and some

additives are need to be bought, so we can assume convenience to those who will use
our product. Solanum tuberosom (Potato) shoe shiner is important to restore the shoes

life that could last in a few days. Also the most common characteristic of shoe polish can

be found in a charcoal, because the charcoal is dark gray or black color that is one of the

characteristics of shoe polish (J Dean Taufik Fenis).

Statement of the problem

This study aims to provide a shoe polisher using Solanum tuberosum (Potato). The
researchers use this study that will probably help the students to spend less and look
presentable and tidy.

This study aims to determine the potential of Solanum tuberosum (Potato)as an

alternative shoe polisher.

Specifically, the study is sought to answer the following questions:

1. What are the characteristics of these materials that enables it to become an
alternative shoe polish.
a. Solanum tuberosum (Potato)
b. Palm oil
c. Charcoal
2. How long does Solanum tuberosum (Potato) as an alternative shoe polisher
will last?
3. How effective does Solanum tuberosum (Potato) as an alternative shoe
polisher?
4. What is the potential of Solanum Tuberosum (Potato) that makes it as an

alternative shoe polisher?

Hypothesis

If the Solanum tuberosum (Potato), soap, palm oil and coal will become an

alternative shoe shiner that undergoes through experimentation and applying it to the
shoes, and then observed it if when could it lasts, and it is to be an effective shoe shiner.

If the shoe shiner could restore the life of the shoes and make it presentable again, then

it can be an alternative shoe shiner.

Definition of terms

to provide a thorough study and deep understanding of the investigation, the

following terms were operationally defined as they were being used in the study.

Palm Oil. From the coconut palm (Cocos Nucifera) is any non polar chemical

substance that is a viscous liquid at ambient temperatures and is both hydrophobic (does

not mix with water, literally "water fearing") and lipophilic (mixes with other oils, literally

"fat loving"). Oils have a high carbon and hydrogen content and are usually flammable

and surface active.

Solanum tuberosum (Potato). The potato is a starchy, tuberous crop from the

perennial nightshade Solanum tuberosum native to the Americas. The importance of

potato as a food source and culinary ingredient varies by region and is still changing.

Potatoes provide one of the most concentrated and affordable sources of potassium—

significantly more than those foods commonly associated with being high in potassium.

Shoe Polish. It is usually made from ingredients including some or all of naphtha,

lanolin, turpentine, wax (often Carnauba wax), gum arabic, ethylene glycol, and if required

a colourant, such as carbon black or an azo dye (such as aniline yellow). Potassium is

also an ingredient in shoe shining. It is used to nourish the leather of the shoes. It’s

natural oils are being sipped by leather shoes, making it shiny. Potato contains potassium

that is highly significant in shoe polishing.
