01 Wajib Prayers

The following prayers are regarded as Wajib (necessary) prayers:

1. Three Rak„at of Witr.

2. Two Rak„at of „Eidul-Fitr
1. Two Rak„at of „Eidul Adha.
2. Two Rak„at offered after performing the Tawaf of the Ka„bah.

If a person misses these prayers continuously and intentionally, he is

deemed sinful.

Witr Prayer

It is reported that the holy prophet said

"O you people of the Quran, perform the Witr, for Allah is one and he
loves the Witr.”

The Witr prayer is the last prayer of the night.

It can be offered at any time after the Isha' prayer and before the Fajr
prayer.

Tanzeel Book of Salah Part 2 7

The Hukm of Witr

Witr Prayer is a Necessary (Wajib) prayer for both male and female.

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), strongly emphasised the

importance of this prayer, and he, himself, did not leave this prayer out
even if he was on a journey or on his mount.

Due to the very firm nature of the Prophet's emphasis scholars have
classed this prayer as wajib (Necessary).

Time of Witr prayer

It's time is after Isha prayer and before Fajr,

It is recommended that a Muslim performs it straight after Isha if he

feels that he may fall asleep and miss it.

It is to be performed alone and not in congregation, except for during

Ramadan when Muslims gather for Taraweeh and prayer Witr together.

Tanzeel Book of Salah Part 2 8

02 How to pray Witr

In the ahadith we find the prophet taught us various ways to pray Witr.
In this lesson we are teaching one of the ways.

We make intention that we are praying three Rak‟at Witr prayer Wajib.
Witr prayer is three continuous Rak‟at (units), like Maghrib, with some
difference in the last Rak‟at.

It starts with no Adhan or Iqama and the Muslim should make the
intention to perform Witr prayer then start praying as if he/she is praying
Maghrib.

When he/she finishes reading El Fatiha of the third Rak‟at he/she

should go on and read any Surah from the Quran.

The Recommended Surahs in Witr

It is allowed to choose any Surahs when reading the three Raka‟at of

Witr, however it is recommended to follow the Holy Prophet .
He would read
 Surah El A'alah in the first Rak‟at,
 Surah El Kafiroon in the second
 Surah Ikhlas for the third.

Tanzeel Book of Salah Part 2 9

Dua Qunoot Before Ruku

After reciting Surah Ikhlas he would raise his hands like the first
Takbeer and say )‫ )الل َه اكبر‬then return his hands folded right on left, like
the other prayers, and he would say the Qunoot Dua:

03 Dua Qunoot
Oh Allah we seek help only from you

َ ْ َ
We ask your forgiveness

And we believe in you

And we are not ungrateful to you

And we stay away from bad people

Oh Allah you alone we worship

and make Sajda

And only towards you do we hurry

َ َ
And we hope for your mercy

And we fear your punishment
Indeed your punishment will definitely reach the Kuffar.

04 Alternative Dua Qunoot

Oh Allah guide me amongst those you have guided

Give me good health like those whom you have given good health

Tanzeel Book of Salah Part 2 12

Look after me like those whom you look after

َ َ ْ َ َ ْ
Bless me in what good things you have given me

Protect me from the evil you have decreed for me

Verily your order prevails over everyone. Nobody’s order prevails over
you

No one who is in your care is humiliated

And your enemies will find honour

Blessed and exalted are you Oh Lord

We seek forgiveness from you and we repent in your presence

Tanzeel Book of Salah Part 2 13

Oh Allah Show mercy on our prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)

Once finished with the Qunoot Dua the Muslim finishes by going to
Ruku then completing the rest of the prayer as he/she would one of the
daily prayers.

05 When you think you may die

Say: “There is no god but Allāh”

Discussion:

The Prophet  said

“Whoever’s last words are “lā ilāha illal lāh”, he/she will enter
Paradise.”

06 Reminder at death bed

If you are with somebody who is close to death, you should sit beside
him/her and recite
Tanzeel Book of Salah Part 2 14
There is no god but Allāh.

This is as a reminder for the person in their last moments.

When we hear that a person has died

To Allāh we belong

and to Him

ِ ‫ر‬
َ
we will return

07 Janāzah Prayer

Janazah is a special prayer for a person who has died.

It is a collective duty on the Muslims (Fard Kifaya). A collective

duty means if some people perform the prayer the rest of the
Muslims are not sinful. But if nobody performs the janazah all
the Muslims who are able and aware will be sinful.

The body is washed and a cloth (normally white) is used to

cover the body.

Janazah prayer normally is led by an imam. The dead body is

in front of the Imam.

There are no adhan, Iqama, ruku or Sujood. The whole prayer

is standing with no movements until the end of the prayer.

There are four Takbeer.

Tanzeel Book of Salah Part 2 16

First Takbeer

To pray Janazah we must have wudu and make the intention.

Intention: I intend to offer janazah salah behind imam with four
takbeer and make dua for this deceased person.

Intention can be uttered verbally or in your mind.

After the first takbeer of the Janazah prayer, you raise your
hands and bind them like a normal salah.

We should recite Thana and Surah Fatiḥah as a dua.

If there is not enough time, one will suffice.

Tanzeel Book of Salah Part 2 17

Glory be to you Oh Allah

and in Praise to you

And blessed is your name

Very high is your greatness

And there is no god besides you

Second Takbeer

At the second takbeer, we do not raise our hands. We recite

blessings upon the Prophet 

Tanzeel Book of Salah Part 2 18

Oh Allah shower your mercy on Muhammad and his family

Oh, Allah shower your blessings on Muhammad and his family

As you showered your blessings on Ibrahim

And his family

Tanzeel Book of Salah Part 2 19

Truly you are praiseworthy and most High

Third Takbeer

At the third takbeer do not raise your hands.

You should recite the following dua if the dead person is an

adult:
O Allah! Forgive our living and our dead;

Those present and those absent;

َ ْ َ َ َ ْ َ َ
Our young and our old;

Our men and our women

Tanzeel Book of Salah Part 2 20

O Allah, whoever amongst us You keep alive,
Keep them living upon Islam
ْ
And whoever amongst us You take back

Let them die upon faith

O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward

and do not let us stray after him.

Reward

The Prophet  said that you will get a mountain of reward for
taking part in the Janāzah prayer.

Tanzeel Book of Salah Part 2 21

08 Child’s Janāzah

If the dead person is a child, after the third Takbeer read the
following dua:

For a little boy

O Allah, make him our fore-runner

And make him for us a reward and a treasure

And make him for us a pleader, and accept his pleading

Tanzeel Book of Salah Part 2 22

For a little girl

And make her for us a reward and a treasure

And make her for us a pleader, and accept her pleading

Fourth Takbeer

After that the Imam says Takbeer without raising his hands and the
Muslims follow him silently. Then the Imam and the Muslims turn their
faces right and then left saying Tasleem which is,

May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon you
The Janazah prayer is now complete.

09 When burying the person who has died

In the name of Allah and on the Sunnah (the way) of the messenger of
Allah.

Discussion:
Why should we visit the graves?
The Prophet commanded us to visit graves as it will remind us of
death.

10 When visiting graves

We ask Allāh

Fire.

14 The Sunnah Mu Akkadah

These are prayers performed before or after the Fard Prayers. They are
prayers that the Holy Prophet  used to perform all the time.

We should not miss these prayers.

He used to perform:

1. Two Rak‟at before Fajr, in which he would read Surah El Kafiroon

in the first and El ikhlas in the second.

2. Four Rak‟at with one Tasleem before Dhuhr and two after.

3. Two Rak‟at after Maghrib.

4. Two Rak‟at after Isha.

Tanzeel Book of Salah Part 2 28

5. Four Rak‟at with one Tasleem before Jumma'.

6. Four Rak‟at with one Tasleem after Jumma'.

15 Sunnah Ghair Mu Akkadah

These are voluntary prayers performed before or after the Fard Prayers.
They are prayers that the Holy Prophet  used to perform sometimes.

He used to perform:

1. Four Rak‟at with one Tasleem before Asr.

2. Four Rak‟at Before Isha.

16 How to pray the 4 Rak’at sunnah prayer

Two rak‟at Sunnah prayers are performed exactly like 2 rak‟at Fard
prayers.

If you are praying a three rak‟at or four rak‟at prayer:

In the fard prayers no surah is added after El-faatiha in the third or

fourth rak‟at.

Tanzeel Book of Salah Part 2 29

In a 4 rak‟at Sunna prayers we have to add a Surah in each and every
rak‟at after reading el-faatiha.

17 Eid El Fitr
After fasting during the blessed month of Ramadan, Muslims celebrate
with the Festival of breaking the Fast. They welcome this festival with a
two rak‟at prayer to Allah .

Sunnah actions on Eid-ul Fitr

 Brush our teeth, have a bath, wear perfume and our best clothes
 Breakfast with sweet dishes
 Give charity of Fitr before Eid prayer
 If possible, walk to Eid prayer and return by different route.
 If possible, pray Eid prayer outdoors otherwise the masjid is
permissible.

Our prophet prayed the Eid prayer in various ways. In this lesson we
are showing one of the ways.

Intention: I intend to pray 2 rak‟at Wajib of Eid ul Fitr with six Wajib
takbeer.

This can be verbally uttered or said in the mind.

Tanzeel Book of Salah Part 2 30

First Rak’at

 The Imam says Takbeer El Tahreem (raise hands and binds them)
then reads Thana.

 After reading the Thana, say the Eid Takbeer three times raising
hands to the ears and let the hands rest at the sides. After the
third Eid Takbeer bind the hands again.

 Then the Imam reads surah El Fatiha adding Surah El Aala.

 Then Ruku followed by Sujood like on Friday.

Second Rak’at

 The Imam reads El Fatiha followed by El Ghasheea (88)

 Then he says the three Eid Takbeer raising his hands to his ears
and dropping hands to the sides.

 Finally, he says Takbeer without raising hands and goes to ruku

and completes the prayer as he would on a Friday.

After completing the prayer, the Imam will give a khutba of two parts,
the same as Friday apart from it being after the prayer, in which he will
start with saying the Eid Takbeer. We must be quiet and listen to the
Khutba.

18 Takbeer – Days of Hajj

It is obligatory on each Muslim male to recite the Takbeer of Tashreeq

once after each fard salah on the days of Hajj.

Its starts from Fajr prayer on the 9th Zulhajj to Asr prayer on the 13th of
Zulhajj.

This must be recited audibly by men. It is recommended for women to

recite the takbeer as well. They may do it in a low voice.

19 Eid El Adha

It is recommended to start saying the Eid Takbeer after Fajr.

The Muslims then go to the Masjid saying the Takbeer in an audible
tone.

The Festival of Sacrifice is exactly the same apart for the intention
(Neeya); the Muslim makes his intention to pray the prayer of the
festival wajib with six takbeer followed by the Khutbah.

20 Friday Prayer (Salah El Jumma')

Friday prayer is an obligatory (Fard) prayer for all male, adult, Muslims
who live in a group. It is congregational and cannot be performed alone.

Bath (Ghusl)

A Muslim must make wudu before any prayer but the Prophet (peace be
upon him) recommended all Muslims to have a bath on Friday, apply
perfume and put on his best clothes before going to the Friday prayers
(Jumma').

The Fard actions in having a bath are

 Rinse our mouth

 Clean our nose
 Run water completely over our body (shower)
Tanzeel Book of Salah Part 2 33
How to perform Jumma prayer

The time for the Friday prayer is at the Dhuhr time and performed
instead of Dhuhr prayer.

On entering the mosque he should say:

َ َ ْ َ َ َ ْ َ ْ ْ َ ْ َّ ُ ّّٰ َ
‫اللهم افتح لِي ابواب رحم ِتك‬

Oh Allah! Open for me the doors of your mercy

Activities in the masjid

Then he should sit and listen to the Quran, if someone is reading, or

read Quran himself or sit quietly and remember Allah saying,

When it is time the first adhan will be performed. He should make the
dua after adhan.

Tanzeel Book of Salah Part 2 34

4 Rakat Sunnah before Jummah

Then he should get up and pray four Rak‟at Sunnah which is prayed in
the same way he would pray Dhuhr adding a surah to all the Rak‟at.

The Second Adhan & The Khutba

At the end of the Sunnah prayers the Imam will come to the pulpit (Min-
ber) and the (Mu-edh-in) will make Adhan and everybody will make the
Dua' after the Adhan like the first one.

The Muslim should pay attention to the Imam's khutba if he makes any
noise he will not have the reward of Friday prayer. The Imam will make
two khutbas, one after another sitting in between them for a short time.

When praying behind an Imam Muslims should always follow the

Imam's movement and never move before him.

Four Rakat Sunnah after Jummah

Once the Friday prayer is over the Muslim should pray four Rak‟at
Sunnah like before the prayer, which he can either do in the mosque or
at home.

Tanzeel Book of Salah Part 2 36

21 Prostration of forgetfulness

It is human to make mistakes, even during prayer. Islam is the religion

of easy; therefore, it allows us to make up for our mistakes.
Sujood El Sahu is performed if the Muslim misses a Wajib action in his
or her prayer. The Wajib actions are:

1. Reciting Surah El Fatiha in every Rak‟at.

2. Adding a Surah or three ayahs in the first and second Rak‟at of a
Fard prayer.
3. Standing up straight after Ruku. No slouching.
4. Touching the nose and the forehead on the ground during Sujood.
5. Praying calmly and not jumping up when standing or dropping down
when going to Sujood. No jerky movements.
6. Sitting in the middle of prayer (after the first two Rak‟at).
7. Reading Tashahud in every sitting.
8. Standing up after Tashahud for the third Rak‟at without any delay.
9. Saying Tasleem
10. At Fajr, Maghrib and Isha jamat prayers the Imam should read
Surah Fatiha and additional Surahs in the first two Rak‟at loudly.
11. To say Dua Qunoot when praying Witr. If one forgets to say Dua'
Qunoot and remember after he has done Ruku then he should not go
back and do it. He should make Sujood El Sahu.
12. The right order of movement and reading during prayer.
13. The six Takbeer in the Eid Prayer.

Tanzeel Book of Salah Part 2 37

22 How to perform Prostration of
forgetfulness

If you realise during prayer that a Wajib action has not been done:

 Complete all the units of a prayer

 Sit down and read tashahud as normal.
 Without reading durood or dua, look at right shoulder and make
tasleem.

 Then perform two prostrations in the usual way, sit and repeat
Tashahud. Conclude the salah with durood, dua & tasleem.
 Your prayer is now complete.

If you miss a fard action in prayer, you must repeat the prayer
completely.

Tanzeel Book of Salah Part 2 38

23 Prostration of recitation (Sujood El
Tilawa)

There are fourteen ayahs in the Holy Quran that require the Muslim to
make Sujood if read or heard. This is Wajib.

The fourteen ayahs are:

El-A;raf [7:206] El-Ra;d [13:15] El Nahl [16:50]

Bani Isra'il [17:109] Maryam [19:58] Hajj [22:18]
El Furqan [25:60] El Naml [27:26] Tanzeel [32:15]
Saad [38:24] Ha-Meem-Sajda [41:38] El Najm [53:62]
El Inshiqaq [84:21] El aalaq [96:19]

How to perform the Sujood El Tilawa?

 Have Wudhu
 Face Qibla
 Stand and say takbeer and go to sujood – don‟t bind your arms

 Read three times

 Say takbeer and either sit or stand

 The Sujood is complete

If the Imam recites an ayah of prostration he should prostrate and the

followers should with him.
Tanzeel Book of Salah Part 2 39
If an ayah of prostration is repeated many times there is only a need for
one prostration.

When making prostration of recitation (Sujood El Tilawa) you can add

My face prostrated to the one who created it, and caused hearing

And seeing, by his power and might so blessed is Allah the best of
creators.

24 Vigil of Ramadan (Taraweeh)

During the Holy month of Ramadan it is an emphasized Sunnah for the

all Muslims to prayer twenty Rak‟at during the night and it is better that
they pray them after Isha prayer before Witr, although it is permissible
to pray after Witr.

Praying Taraweeh in congregation is a collective Sunnah, so as long as

some Muslims in the area perform it, the others are not required.
However, if there is no congregation for Taraweeh in an area, then all
the Muslims in the area would have left the Sunnah and are sinful.

Tanzeel Book of Salah Part 2 40

It is recommended that men gather in the Mosque and the Imam leads
them in five sets of four Rak‟at. He makes Tasleem after every two
Rak‟at and rests after every four during which he makes Dua'.
After they finish the twenty Rak‟at the Imam leads them in Salah El Witr,
this is the only time that Witr should be prayed in congregation.
It is recommended that the Imam finishes reading the whole of the Holy
Quran at least once during Taraweeh in the month of Ramadan.

25 Night Prayer (Tahejjud)

Tahejjud is the night prayer that was made obligatory for the Holy
Prophet  and Sunnah (recommended) for the rest of the Muslims.

It's time is after Isha and before Fajr. It is preferable to perform Tahejjud
before Witr, even though it is permitted to pray it after Witr.

The prophet  recommended that Muslim perform it at the last part of

the night if they have the ability to stay awake or wake up for it.

There is no specific number of Rak‟at for the Tahejjud and the reward is
in the length of Qiyam (standing) as it is reported that the Holy Prophet
 sometimes read for a very long time.
Narrated Abu Huraira (Radiallahu anhu): Allah‟s Apostle (Peace be
upon him) said,
“Our Lord, the Blessed, the Superior, comes every night down on the
nearest Heaven to us when the last third of the night remains, saying:
Is there anyone to invoke Me, so that I may respond to invocation?
Is there anyone to ask Me, so that I may grant him his request?
Tanzeel Book of Salah Part 2 41
Is there anyone seeking My forgiveness, so that I may forgive him?
[Bukhari]

26 The Greeting of the Masjid

It is a Sunnah of our Prophet  where he recommended us to perform

two Rak‟at (Tahee-at El Masjid) before we sit down after entering the
Masjid.

27 The prayer after Wudu

It is recommended to perform two Rak‟at immediately after making

Wudu.

28 The Two Rak’at of Ihram

To perform the obligatory pilgrimage (Hajj) or Umrah one must enter

into a state of Ihram. It is recommended to pray two Rak‟at with Surah
kafiroon and Ikhlas in the usual way and then make intention of ihram
followed by Talbiah to start the Hajj rituals.

30 The Two Rak’at of Tawaf

Once the Muslim reaches Mecca he goes to the Ka'bah and performs
the Tawaf. This is when we walk around the Ka‟bah seven times.

Then he goes to edge of the Mataf (so he does not disturb the people
making tawaf) and performs a two Rak‟at prayer. This prayer is wajib.

Tanzeel Book of Salah Part 2 43

31 The Prayer of a sick person

When it is impossible for a sick person to stand, he prays sitting,

performing Ruku` and Sujood while sitting.

If he is unable to perform Ruku` and Sujood, he makes gestures with

his head, and makes the Sujood lower than the Ruku`.

If he is unable to sit, he lies down on his back, and gestures for Ruku`
and Sujood, he can also lay down on his side, with his face toward the
Qibla, and gesture.

If he is unable to gesture with his head, indicates with his eyes, his
eyelid or his heart, or he delays the salah.

If a Muslim loses consciousness for five prayers or less, he makes them

up when he recovers, but if he misses more than that due to
unconsciousness, he does not make them up.

Tanzeel Book of Salah Part 2 44

32 The prayer of the Traveller (Musafir)

When we travel we shorten our prayers.

Normally When travelling

It is not allowed to pray the complete fard prayers when travelling. The
Muslim must shorten the fard prayers.

Any extra prayer after that must be with the intention of nawafil.

Tanzeel Book of Salah Part 2 45

If the traveller is praying behind an imam who is not travelling then
he/she prays the same number of Rak‟at as the imam does.

The traveller continues to be a traveller as long as he/she does not

intend to stay somewhere for more than fifteen days.

About Tanzeel
Tanzeel was established in 2007 by concerned parents in Tower Hamlets. We
wanted an afterschool class specialising in delivering high quality Tajweed and
Hifdh blended with Islamic studies.
We wanted a syllabus that would address issues facing the younger generation
living in The West while focusing on nurturing Islamic characteristics and morals in
our children.
About this book
This book continues from Book 3 where the basics of salah (prayer) was
introduced. This book gives further details on the other prayers that are important
in the life of a Muslim ranging from witr, jummah, janazah and more.
