EXECUTION

1.12 Installation of Wellpoint System

A. General: Coordinate and determine the exact location of each wellpoint with the limits of the
excavation. The wellpoint system must be submitted for approval as specified herein prior to
installation.
B. Locations: The wellpoints shall be installed at the locations shown or as chosen by the Contractor
and approved by the Geotechnical Engineer. The wellpoints shall have a clear distance of 3
meters from the soldier piers.

C. Installation Method: The well shall be installed by the following method or by another method
proposed by the Contractor to suit ground conditions and approved by the Geotechnical Engineer.

1. Predrill a 350mm or 375mm diameter hole to the top of the semi-pervious stratum to be
dewatered with every fourth hole (in the minimum system) extended to the bottom of the
semi-pervious stratum. Hydraulic rotary or auger methods of drilling may be used. No
drilling muds or additives, other than water, shall be used in drilling the hole for the well.
The hole shall be kept full of water during the predrilling, and withdrawal of the auger, so
as to minimize caving of the hole.

2. After predrilling the hole to the top of the semi-pervious stratum, it shall then be washed
out by driving and jetting (with clear water) a 400mm “sanding” casing with a hole puncher
to the bottom of the semi-pervious stratum. Care shall be exercised in advancing the hole
puncher so that excessive water pressures are not developed that could blow out around
the well casing.

3. After the “sanding” casing is driven and jetted to the required depth, it shall be washed
clean by jetting with clear water. The jet pump, pipe, and hose shall be of sufficient
capacity to produce an upward velocity inside the casing to remove all material in the
casing, so that the wellpoint screen and riser can be set to grade. The “sanding” casing
shall be kept filled with water until the wellpoint screen and filter sand have been placed so
as to prevent any “blow-in” of the bottom of the hole.

4. Particular care should be exercised to avoid damaging the wellpoint screen and extraction
pipes during installation. The wellpoint screen and extraction pipes shall be centered in
the “sanding” casing and held securely in place during placement of the filter through the
use of approved centering guides. Prior to installation of any wellpoints, the method,
equipment, and devices proposed for use to hold the wellpoint and riser pipes in the center
of the casing. The clear depth in the casing shall be checked by sounding with a device
furnished by the Contractor and approved by the Geotechnical Engineer before installing
the extraction wellpoint. One centering device should be provided at the extraction point,
with a minimum of one additional centering device 7.5 meters up from the extraction point.
The assembled wellpoint and riser pipes shall be placed in the well hole in such

TEMPORARY DEWATERING SPECIFICATIONS GEMS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL PH.-2

misaligned. The educator body shall be centered below the base of the semi-pervious
stratum with the center located as required. The 1.5 meters long wellpoint shall be located
at or below the educator body. The holes for every fourth well which were extended to the
level of the semi-pervious stratum shall be filled with sand to the level of the wellpoint.

5. After the wellpoint and riser pipes have been installed, the specified filter sand shall be
carefully poured into the “sanding” casing around the assembled riser pipes and wellpoint.
All of the filter sand shall be placed in a continuous, even manner to avoid bridging and
segregation. Before placing the filter sand, the top of the riser pipe shall be securely
covered or capped to prevent filter sand from falling into the pipe. Filter sand shall be
placed and the remainder of the hole filled with a thick cement/bentonite grout or by
pouring in a mixture of dry sand containing 10 percent granular bentonite up to the ground
surface.

D. Development of Wellpoints: Within 12 hours after installation, each wellpoint shall be pumped until
the flow is clear and free of any sand. Each wellpoint shall be pumped with an approved pump
(capable of producing a drawdown in the wellpoint of at least 4.5 to 6.0 meters) for 20 minutes at
which time the rate of flow from the wellpoint shall be measured.

1.13 Installation of Piezometer

A. Procedure: Piezometers shall be installed to measure the groundwater level in the strata beneath
and outside the excavation. The Contractor shall submit the locations and number of piezometers
to the Geotechnical Engineer for approval prior to installation. Filter Sand for the wellpoints shall
be placed around the piezometer tips and above the top of the piezometer screen for 1.5 meters.
Holes for piezometers may be advanced by either: (1) using a 200mm O.D., continuous flight
auger with a 85mm I.D., hollow stem with the hollow stem plugged at the bottom with a removable
plug, (2) auguring and more or less simultaneous installation of a 150mm casing, or (3) using a
rotary wash drilling procedure (150mm diameter) and an organic drilling fluid such as “Revert” if
necessary to keep the drilled hole open.

The hole for a piezometer shall be kept filled with water or approved organic drilling fluid at all
times. Bentonitic drilling mud shall not be used. Augers used in advancing the hole shall be
withdrawn slowly from the hole so as to minimize any suction effect caused by withdrawing the
auger. (Hollow-stem augers shall be filled with drilling fluid before pulling the plug in the bottom of
the auger).

B. Drilling and Installation Procedures: Drilling and installation procedure shall be in accordance with
accepted practice and as approved by the Geotechnical Engineer, prior to installation.

C. Sealing and Protection of Piezometers: The seal shall consist of 600mm of bentonite installed by
lowering pallets into the annulus above the filter sand. The backfill for the piezometers shall
consist of a pumpable cement-bentonite grout approved by the Geotechnical Engineer. Use only
enough water to make the grout pumpable.

D. Top of Piezometers: The tops of the risers shall extend 750mm above the ground surface. The
upper part of the piezometer shall be protected by installing a 150mm I.D. PVC or corrugated metal
pipe around the riser concreted to a depth of 600mm below the ground surface. The top 750mm of
the piezometer shall be painted orange and the number marked with 75mm high black letters on
the pipe guard around the riser pipe.

E. Protection of Piezometers: Piezometers both inside and outside the excavation boundaries shall
be protected throughout the excavating process.

1.14 Piezometer Development and Testing

A. Procedure: After each piezometer is installed it shall be promptly flushed with clean water,
developed, and pumped to determine if it is functioning properly. If an organic drilling fluid has
been used, Johnson’s “Fast Break” or equivalent shall be added in accordance with the
manufacturer’s recommendations to break down the drilling fluid. A 3.0 meters minimum positive
head shall be maintained in the piezometer following addition of the “Fast Break”. After 30 minutes
has elapsed, the piezometer shall be flushed with clear water and pumped. The piezometer may
be pumped with either a suction pump or by means of compressed air. The approximate rate of
pumping during development shall be measured. Piezometers installed in the semi-pervious
stratum will be considered acceptable if they will pump at a rate of 0.75 liter per minute or more, or
when the piezometer is filled with water, the water level falls approximately half the distance to the
groundwater table in a time less than the time given below for various types of soil:

Type of Soil in Which Period of Approx. Time of

Piezometer Screen Observation 50% Fall
_______is Set_______ ___(Min)___ ____(Min)___

Sandy Silt (50% silt) 30 30

Silty Sand (50% to 12% silt) 10 5
Fine Sand (12% silt) 5 1

B. Verification: If the piezometer does not function properly, it shall be developed by a combination of
air surging and pumping with air as necessary to make it perform properly. If the piezometer will
not perform properly it shall be reinstalled at a nearby location as directed by the Geotechnical
Engineer.

1.15. Monitoring Groundwater Level and Wellpoint Flows

A. The Contractor shall measure, daily, the groundwater level in the two semi-previous stratum
beneath the excavation and flow from the jet-educator system. Copies of all piezometer and
wellpoint flow data shall be furnished to the Geotechnical Engineer within hours of being taken.

1.16. Removal of Jet-Educator System

A. Procedure: The Contractor shall remove the wellpoint system after completion of the Work as
specified below. Removal of the system shall include pulling all of the wellpoints and related
header pipes, pumps, recirculation tank, and any temporary power sources installed, as approved
by the Geotechnical Engineer. Any holes remaining after the pulling of the wellpoints shall be filled
with sand and sealed with a grout plug to prevent surface in-flow to the wells. Sump pumping of
seepage and surface water thereafter shall continue as required to keep the excavation in a
dewatered condition until construction is complete.

B. Schedule of Removal: The Contractor shall continue operation of the dewatering system until all
items listed below have been implemented:

1. The complete permanent system has been installed; is operational, including gravity wells,
underfloor drainage, piezometers, pumps and sumps; and has been approved in writing by
the Owner’s Representative.
2. Full structural frame and basement walls from the lowest level to street level have been
completely constructed.

3. Written approval from the Owner’s Representative.
