Homework Policy:
There will be 1 homework assignment a week that will typically be assigned on Thursday via Canvas and due on
Thursday. The homework questions will be posted as a pdf, but you will enter you answers into the appropriate
quiz on Canvas. Your answers must be entered by midnight on the day that the HW is due. Late homework
will not be accepted. You are expected to work on the homework throughout the week and NOT wait until the last
minute to submit your answers. You will have 7 attempts for each problem. You are encouraged to work on the
homework individually and get help from Dr. Bigelow as needed during office hours. DO NOT SEARCH THE
INTERNET FOR SOLUTIONS AS THIS WILL BE CONSIDERED CHEATING.

Weekly Quizzes:
In addition to the homework, you will be expected to complete a weekly quiz every week. The quiz will have two
parts. The first part will cover conceptual questions (True/False, multiple choice, matching, etc.) from the textbook
and lecture. You will have two attempts to complete the conceptual questions and your final grade will be the
average of the two attempts. The second part of the quiz will consist of a set of problems that are usually
relatively similar to the homework problems. You will have 3 attempts on the problems with your final score
given by the highest score of all of your attempts similar to the homework. However, every attempt of the
second part of the quiz will have different numbers. You should not attempt the quiz until after you have already
completed the weekly homework assignment. The quizzes will be due the day after the homework. The quiz is
open book/open note and will be provided online via Canvas. You will have two hours for each attempt for each
portion of the quiz and you must complete the quiz in one sitting within the two hours/attempt. You MUST work
on the quiz individually.

Lab Policy:
There will be a required lab every week starting the 2nd week of class. You MUST go to your assigned lab section.
The lab TA’s will be taking attendance for their section. If you do not attend your assigned lab section, you will
receive a zero for the lab unless special arrangements have been made due to a unique circumstance. If you are
going to miss your lab for an excusable reason, you must contact your lab TA BEFORE the lab starts and
make arrangements to do the lab during one of the other lab times or you will receive a zero for that lab. If
you are unable to contact your TA, then send me an email with a time stamp BEFORE your lab starts. If you are
not able to make contact before the lab due to an emergency, let me know the nature of the emergency as soon as
possible and we will consider the situation on a case-by-case basis. You will be working on the labs in pairs, but
you will each need to turn in your own copy of the lab report. The lab reports should be completed on the
provided lab description. In addition, before leaving the lab, you MUST demo part of the lab for the TA. After
completing the lab, you will then scan in the lab and upload it. Each lab partner should upload their own copy. If
you do not upload a copy, then you will get a zero for the lab even if your lab partner turns in their copy of
the lab. Late lab reports will have a 20% penalty AND must be submitted by the first day of finals week to
receive any credit. YOU MUST EARN AN AVERAGE LAB GRADE OF AT LEAST 60% TO PASS THE
COURSE.

Lab Tardiness
If you are going to be late to the lab for any reason, you must also notify the TA in advance. If you are late due to
an emergency, then we will evaluate the situation on a case-by-case basis. Unexcused tardiness will result in the
following deductions to your grade. The deduction will be evaluated on an individual basis. In addition, you will
NOT be given any additional time to complete the lab for unexcused tardiness.

Accessibility Statement:
Iowa State University is committed to assuring that all educational activities are free from discrimination and
harassment based on disability status. Students requesting accommodations for a documented disability are
required to work directly with staff in Student Accessibility Services (SAS) to establish eligibility and learn about
related processes before accommodations will be identified. After eligibility is established, SAS staff will create
and issue a Notification Letter for each course listing approved reasonable accommodations. This document will be
made available to the student and instructor either electronically or in hard-copy every semester. Students and
instructors are encouraged to review contents of the Notification Letters as early in the semester as possible to
identify a specific, timely plan to deliver/receive the indicated accommodations. Reasonable accommodations are
not retroactive in nature and are not intended to be an unfair advantage. The notification letter must be received
by me no less than 4 business days before the exam needing accommodation. Additional information or
assistance is available online at www.sas.dso.iastate.edu, by contacting SAS staff by email at
accessibility@iastate.edu, or by calling 515-294-7220. Student Accessibility Services is a unit in the Dean of
Students Office located at 1076 Student Services Building.

Religious Accommodation
Iowa State University welcomes diversity of religious beliefs and practices, recognizing the contributions differing
experiences and viewpoints can bring to the community. There may be times when an academic requirement
conflicts with religious observances and practices. If that happens, students may request reasonable accommodation
for religious practices. In all cases, you must put your request in writing. The instructor will review the situation in
an effort to provide a reasonable accommodation when possible to do so without fundamentally altering a course.
For students, you should first discuss the conflict and your requested accommodation with your professor at the
earliest possible time. You or your instructor may also seek assistance from the Dean of Students Office at 515-
294-1020 or the Office of Equal Opportunity at 515-294-7612.

Academic Misconduct:
You are expected to practice academic honesty in every aspect of this course and all other courses. Make sure you
are familiar with the ISU Student Information Handbook, especially the section on academic misconduct. Students
who engage in academic misconduct are subject to university disciplinary procedures. My definitions of what is
considered academic misconduct are detailed below.
 Copying homework answers from your classmate. You can discuss solution methodology but do not
simply share answers.
 Obtaining previous homework solutions that may be available from those that have taken the class
previously or available online. You should only consult your class notes and textbook for examples. Using
an internet search engine to find solutions to the assigned or similar problems will be considered cheating.
 Copying exam answers from your neighbor or communicating with your neighbor or any other person with
the exception of Dr. Bigelow during the exam.
 Discussing the exam with another classmate before you or they have taken the exam.
 Copying lab answers from a friend or copies of labs from previous semesters without physically coming to
the lab and working on the lab.
 Discussing the weekly quizzes with any other student for any reason.
If you violate these standards, you will receive an F for the course. In addition, uploading any of the course
material to a website or any physical location designed to provide others access to the material will result in an
automatic F in the course. The provided materials are for your use only. They are not for distribution to students
and others not currently enrolled in the course.

Lab Safety
This class has a substantial hands-on laboratory section. Students will be using expensive, sensitive, and potentially
hazardous test equipment. Safety in the lab is a number one priority for students and instructors. To ensure a safe
laboratory experience, a brief safety presentation will be given the first day of class. It is mandatory that all students
attend this presentation or watch the recorded lecture online. Moreover, it is expected that students follow any and
all posted safety guidelines.
