THE ART OF BINATOG

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Bualaw also known Binatog as is a common street

food found in the Phillpipines. It is usually being sold by

street vendors roaming house to house with their bikes.

Way back in the past, venodors of binatog carries bilao or

winnowing baskets on top of their heads rather than using

bicycles. Binatog is made from boiled corn kernels with

grated coconuts on top. They boil binatog not because for

cooking purposes only but for the skin of the corn to be removed easily.

Some uses “Apog” to make the skin softer. But the downside is that it affects the flavor of

the binatog due to its strong smell and taste. Others add condense milk, margarine, salt or sugar to

make it more delicious. Buyers usually shout “Binatooooooooooog!” when they see vendors

outside to buy binatog, this process is a tradition to Filipinos. The vendors already have plastic

cups and spoon with them in selling binatog so you won’t have to worry about it especially when

you are outside and planning to buy binatog. Also, binatog is one of

the most favored street food here in the Philippines commonly sold in

the Northern Philippines. The vendors known also as magbibinatog

carrying characteristics large tin cans, similar to taho.

Binatog come from the regions of the country where the corn is
abundant. Perhaps from the Luzon especially in Northern provinces.
RELATED STUDY TAHO.

We all know that “TAHO” is one of the street food here in Philippines and many Filipinos

considered it a good breakfast option. It is related to binatog

because they are bought in the streets and it also be satisfying

because of its price just like binatog. Taho is composed of tofu,

brown sugar syrup, and sago pearls. Fresh, silken tofu is the

preferred base, its texture similar to that of a very fine panna cotta.

The soybean custard is then dressed with arnibal, which is brown

sugar that’s been caramelized into a syrup and sometimes flavored with vanilla. Heaping spoonfuls

of translucent, gummy sago pearls crown each serving, though customers can also opt to leave

them out.

Mexican corn salad. There have been similarities between

the dish from Mexico and the dish here in the Philippines which is

the binatog. Both are cooked in in the same way but the Mexican

salad has other ingredients like carrots, olives and more. Both are

also sold in the streets.


PROCESS

The binatog ingredients are 1 can (24 ounce) white hominy, 3/2 tablespoons salted butter

melted, 3 tablespoons grated coconut, 3 teaspoon sugar. After these, we need to follow a procedure

in order to make a binatog. First, in a shallow pot, boil hominy with liquid from can and 1 cup of

water for about 10-15 minutes (until kernels burst open). Second, if you are going to use dried

hominy, soak dried kernels overnight in water. Rinse, place in a pot and cover with water. Simmer

for a few hours until kernels burst open. Third, drain the water and place the boiled hominy in a

serving dish/bowl. Last, add the melted butter and stir. Tap with grated coconut and salt. This is

a snack for Filipinos, they usually sell binatog at 3:00 in the afternoon. This helps to lessen the

hunger of people for a bit. Besides from its delicious sweet taste, it also creates a simple “salo-

salo” to have a bonding time together with your friends and families.

CONTRIBUTION

The binatog the ingredients is easy to find it is cheap and delicious. Easy to cook and the

way it cooks is not complicated. It is a popular street food in Philippines, Can be bought easily.

The disadvantages of binatog is not good for the people who are diabetic, and binatog can be

easily contaminated to exposure and can be spoiled easily.
