T he Virtual University is Pakistan's first public sector university based completely on modern Informa on
and Communica on Technologies with a clear mission: to provide extremely affordable world class educa on to
aspiring students all over the country. The University opened its virtual doors in 2002 using television broadcasts
and the Internet thereby allowing students to follow its rigorous programs regardless of their physical loca on. The
objec ve was to alleviate the lack of capacity in exis ng ins tu ons while simultaneously overcoming the acute
shortage of qualified professors in the country.
By iden fying the top professors of the country, regardless of their ins tu onal affilia ons, and reques ng them to
develop and deliver hand-cra ed courses, the Virtual University aims at raising the standard of higher educa on in
Pakistan by providing high quality, easily accessible and affordable world-class educa on not only to its own
students but also to students of all other universi es in the country. The University holds a Federal Charter, making
its degrees recognized and accepted all over the country as well as overseas. Pakistani students residing overseas in
several other countries have also enrolled in the University's programs.

T he University relies on digital media, Internet and free-to-air satellite television broadcasts to impart
educa on. The University has its own four television channels (VTV1, VTV2, VTV3 & VTV4) and students have the
liberty to watch their lectures in the comfortable surroundings of their homes which become virtual classrooms of
VU or at any of the many VU campuses spread all over the country. These lectures are also available in DVD format
and can easily be purchased at a minimal cost from University’s on-line Bookshop (h p://bookshop.vu.edu.pk).
The lecture videos are also available on the globally popular forum YouTube site with a weblink
h p://www.youtube.com/vu. Over 6000 video lectures on YouTube make it one of the largest contribu ons by any
university to the Open Educa on Resources (OER) movement. VU has now published all courses on its open
courseware site (h p://ocw.vu.edu.pk), and thereby joined the ranks with top universi es of the world. VU’s open
courseware site has been ranked as the best new open courseware site for the year 2012 by the interna onal OCW
Consor um.
The students and teachers use the Internet to interact with each other. For this purpose, the Virtual University has
developed an online Learning Management System (LMS) through which the students have 24/7 access to reading
material, lecture videos, notes and prescribed texts. The students use this system to hold discussions with their
class fellows and put ques ons to their teachers related to the course material, to which they receive
comprehensive and mely replies from their respec ve course teachers. The LMS is also used to hand out
assignments to students and hold pop quizzes and prac ce tests. This innova ve and unique mechanism for the
delivery of educa on adopted by VU offers a high degree of flexibility to students who may view the lectures at a
me of their choice.
Examina ons are conducted by the Virtual University in a formal strictly proctored environment. Exam centers are
announced, examiners and invigilators are appointed and students are allowed to set their own date sheets during
mid and final term examina ons. Examina ons are conducted electronically and each student receives unique
exam paper.
S ince the opening of virtual doors in 2002, the University has outreached hundred ci es of the country
with more than 170 Private Virtual Campuses and 27 VU owned campuses. These campuses provide the required
infrastructure for studying and conduc ng the examina ons for more than 100,000 students of the University. In
addi on, VU has established its own campuses at Abbo abad, Badin, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, Dera Ghazi Khan,
Faisalabad, Gujar Khan, Ghotki, Gujranwala, Hyderabad, Islamabad, Jalalpur Pirwala, Jhelum, Karachi, Lahore,
Makhdoom Rasheed, Multan, Muzaffargarh, Nankana Sahib, Peshawar, Pa oki, Qadirpur Raan, Que a,

T he Virtual University of Pakistan (VUP) laid the founda on of

 Society for Rising Entrepreneurs
its Students’ Socie es with the aim to transform the minds and lives of
its students through crea ve expressions. The founding member of  Sports Society
“Life at VU” is Professor Dr. Muhammad Nawaz. Under his kind  Tourism Club
leadership, the Virtual University has successfully conducted three
consecu ve Student Week Events. The purpose of this pla orm is to  Youth Parliament
bring forward the best students who offer their passion, commitment
and good intent to highlight VU as a purposeful and focused toolkit to
ins ll various skills and talents. To develop confidence and leadership
quali es among students by triggering their talents, the following
socie es/clubs are performing their roles by engaging students in
ac vi es where they would put their heart into performance:

The Virtual University of Pakistan (VUP) being a distance

interac ons and their involvement in extra-curricular ac vi es.
Stylis cally diverse in nature, yet na onally resonant, the 2016 season
of “Student Week”, offered different compe ons under various genres
of socie es.
Mission of “Student Week 2016 Na onal Event” is to connect diverse
groups of students for a shared future towards solidifica on of VU's
status as an important gateway to learning through self-experience.
More than 500 students (winners of regional compe ons) across the
country par cipated in Na onal level event and represented their
respec ve regions. Students par cipated, contributed and
celebrated the Student Week 2016 Na onal Level

Urdu Speech Compe ons were judged by Mr. Ahsin Im az and Ms. Saliha Aqeel. There were

 G ala Dinner was held in the mesmerizing evening of Lahore on November 02, 2016 at Virtual
University Head Office. Mr. Muhammad Zaheer, chief organizer in his opening remarks welcomed
the students and guests from all over Pakistan, he lauded the efforts of organizers in conduc ng the
student week ac vi es. Mr. Owais Anjum played the role of energizing host of the event. The
colorful environment was filled with great zeal, excitement and frolicsome atmosphere of students.
Various performances at gala dinner included, Mesmerizing singing of Mr. Husnain Shakeel, Mr.
Hamza Baig and A musical Band of students, a Mime on terrorism presented by students of
Faisalabad, a mimicry performance by Mr. Hamza Baig, a student from Multan campus and a Hip Hop
dance performance by Syed Anas from Karachi campus.
At the end, Prof. Dr. Muhamamd Nawaz addressed the students and appreciated their ac ve

Complex Lahore on November 03, 2016. The
ceremony started with the Na onal Anthem
preceded towards the enthralling performances
given by the par cipants of Singing Compe on.
The honorable judges for the VU Idol and Short
Play compe on were Mr. Tajdar Alam, an
eminent celebrity of show biz & Mr. Babar Ali,
Program manager VUTV. A erwards the Short
Plays Compe on started. There were five teams
in total who competed at na onal level for Short
Plays. The theme selected by Performing Arts

What a triumph!
I just wanted to congratulate organizers for inspiring & organizing such a profound and
spectacular event. Most importantly, the CMs’ ac ve contribu on across the country is highly
appreciable and I believe that students also learnt a lot and the whole experience gave them
fresh hope and provided new ideas for the future.

Student week is an excellent ac vity when VU students feel their strong bond with the university.
Mee ng with students of all regions especially a visit to head office gives a feeling that we belong

Student week 2016 was one of the outstanding events I had ever a ended. Personally I think this
event was well-organized and very successful. I would like to thank VU management for
