Course Overview
The broad objective of this course is to learn the basic aspects of Operations Management and
Operations Research. Through lectures and case analysis, this course prepares for a study of
different operational issues in manufacturing and services organizations where decision-
making– both at the operational and strategic levels – is emphasized. For example, the fit
between a production system and a production process, between layout and production system,
decisions pertaining to the location of a facility, capacities and layouts of plants, planning,
measuring and scheduling work, are all important Operations-related topics. A common theme
that will run through much of this course is optimization in decision-making and a typical
classroom session will involve hands-on modeling and problem-solving activity.
