September 14,2019 SECTION 29 Understanding the Self
1. What is your understanding of the PBE model?
According to the article written by a renowned psychologist, Albert Bandura (1971) is a model about Person, Behavior and Environment. It describes that there’s some factors can affect cognition, behavior and surroundings concludes that human action is a result of connection among the three factors. His theory is known as Triadic Reciprocal Determinism. Albert Bandura put focus on the concept of reciprocal determinism which claims that not only does the environment influences the person but the person also brings about a change in the environment.
2. Why is PBE model important in understanding the self?
Person, Behavior and Environment is important in understanding the self of an individual because it is one of the ways we can learned from. It’s from our surroundings that we can adapted from. School is not just the way who can taught anyone but also in experiences and what we encountered that may help us to shaped the person we are today. To know a person’s behavior, it needs a person surrounds you (environment) and what will be your decision (cognition) to undergo trials or situation in order to know the person’s decision. It can really help to understand the self.
3. Differentiate each aspect in the PBE model.
The three main factors that are dealt within this theory is called Triadic Reciprocal Causation that are consists of; (1) Personal factors, which is our thoughts, feelings, etc., (2) Behavior and lastly, (3) Environment. And I think it’ll be explained better with an example instead. For exqample, Imagine a person who does not wish to work in a particular firm (personal factor), but the circumstances are such that he/she cannot leave the job. This will make him/her dislike the work and may also result in poor performance (behavior). In return, this will result in the person acting inappropriately, making his colleagues/superiors dislike not only his/her work, but the individual as well (environment). It will only make the situation worse for both the parties. Hence, both social and physical behavior will create a more restrictive environment and lead to further behavior disorders. While all we thought all along it was only the environment that entirely shaped an individual’s behavior, Albert Bandura recognized the importance of the relationship between individuals, their behaviors and the environment.
