STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

INTRODUCTION
I, Talha Bashir s/o Shamim Akhtar Khan, was born on 2 nd September, 1987 and I am currently residing in
Lahore with my parents. I have keen interest in Electrical Engineering and I pursue a vision of being a
distinguished engineer one day. From February 2017 to present, I am currently employed at Freezol
International, where I am working as a Maintenance and Supervisor engineer and have been working
there for over 20 months now. Apart from my work, I have keen interest in travelling, sports and movies.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
I have done BSc Electrical Engineering from Sept 2012 to Sept 2016 from Imperial College of Business
Studies, Lahore. I did intermediate from Crescent Model Higher Secondary School for boys, Shadman
Colony, Lahore in the year 2006 before that I did my Matriculation in the year 2004 from Divisional Public
School, Model Town, Lahore.

WHY CHOOSE ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT?

My interest in engineering started right after completing my intermediate from high school. I was always
interested in exploring circuits and developed a love for machines. I realized much of our modern
industry and production is reliant on electrical equipment, such as electric motors, lighting, wiring,
navigation tools, communications systems and power generators and engineers came up with
remarkable innovative ideas which lead to their country’s success and that further enhanced my
interests in engineering. Furthermore, the economic condition of the country was not so impressive
during that time and getting a job was really tough, so I wanted to be the one to create engineering jobs
by using common engineering principles and help others to apply them to real-world business practices.
So, I decided to study Engineering Management since the business world is in constant need of those
who can apply technological concepts while also keeping in mind important business practices. Focusing
on engineering management offers engineers a variable base of knowledge that can serve many
different business types.
The Master program in Engineering Management is designed to encompass many different facets of
management, from heading up technological departments to organizing supply chains from start to
finish. In general, studies centered on Engineering Management can include coursework such as
mathematical modeling, quality control, finance, and even human resource management. It also makes
engineers sensitive to make employer and customer needs and to changes in business, industry and
government. It will also provide a great platform for those young or experienced engineering graduates
who want to take technical management and leadership role in the big technical firms

WORKING AFTER GRADUATION:

After completing a BSc Engineering degree, I was left with many choices. However, I was slightly unclear
about which area of study should I opt for in terms of getting a masters degree and thought getting some
professional exposure might help me figure that out. Many of my classmates at the university went for
post graduation studies directly after completing their bachelors. I however, took about 12 months gap
as I thought getting some work experience might help me make a better decision. I wanted to know the
practical application to each subject so that I can decide which area of study suits my interests and
abilities. Furthermore, I did some maintenance and mainly supervisory work to maintain professional
and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications;
establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies. I also contributed to team effort
by accomplishing related results as needed, which was a great learning experience.
MY PROFESSIONAL CAREER
During the last 20 months or so I have enjoyed my professional life extensively, I realized that work
wouldn’t take a toll on you if you enjoy what you do. I absolutely love to travel and explore breath taking
beautiful places. I used to visit many Power Plants with my team mates to various parts of different cities
whenever our company gave us a chance. It helped me to achieve my professional goals as I started
getting more information on various processes of transmission and generation of electricity and HVAC
process. We enjoyed travelling to various places as a group and then when we planned tours to different
HVAC and Power plants we arranged seminar and educational tours and was provided full services such
as transport, accommodation and food by our company. It helped me gain confidence in my abilities and
management skills. Working in such an environment has transformed me remarkably and it gave me an
understanding of how engineers and various company managers operate.
Moreover, it helped me explore myself and I realized that I perform exceptionally well while working as
someone who directs the course of a job or a project rather than following directions. I soon realized
that I have the skills and abilities required to manage a whole team and my family along with my senior
colleague engineers have encouraged my ambitions to study Engineering Management. I have a lot of
innovative ideas in my mind and I want to put them into action and for that I need a masters degree that
provides me with all the knowledge I require to be able to hold a leading role in establish a successful
knowledge of both general management and the specific engineering disciplines that will be used by me
to manage by future engineering team. Furthermore, it will also help me to work in my current technical
field and at the same time, expand my leadership and management proficiencies.

WHY CHOOSE ITALY?

Italy is a great destination for students on a tight budget as it has a pretty reasonable cost of living. Italy
is one of the best places to study, being that the country is a member of the European Union and also a
Schengen State.
Beyond high-quality education, Italy also offers a lively and welcoming culture, a fascinating history and
beautiful cities. Universities in Italy are fully open and available for International students so one can
experience different cultures of other countries of the world. Moreover, Italian universities rank among
top 500 universities of the world.

Italian universities are equipped with state of the art labs, libraries, highly qualified faculty and many
other facilities.

WHY CHOOSE Politecnico di Milano?

I have selected Politecnico di Milano for my masters because it’s Engineering Management Department
has many years of experience in teaching and researching the complex aspects of engineering and
management; its professors have worked in various fields in the industry and are innovative in their
teaching methods and techniques when it comes to engineering management. I am also impressed by
the way this course is designed in terms of its contents and I strongly believe it can greatly enhance my
knowledge in engineering management. I am eager to join this program and I hope that I can deliver and
learn from the academically challenging environment of Politecnico di Milano.

FUTURE ENDEVOURS:
My ultimate goal is to become an Engineering Manager. I have researched on emerging industries in
Pakistan, and Renewable Energy is one of them. I met with a few entrepreneurs and discussed my
ambitions and they have been very supporting and guided me about the risks and opportunities of
running a Renewable Energy business in Pakistan. But before I start on my own, I would prefer to work 2
years in a senior managerial position in any prestigious engineering company of Pakistan, so that I can
exercise my decision making skills and get deep understanding of the various engineering ideas and
business environment.

ENGLISH ABILITY
From the beginning, I have been studying in an English medium school. Almost all the courses were
taught in English and so it made me get a firm grip on the language. Moreover I grew up watching
English cartoons and Hollywood movies. I also undertook British Council’s IELTS in which I scored 7 out of
9.

FINANCIAL REQUIREMENTS
My mother, Mrs. Wasfa Shamim, is sponsoring my studies and would bare my living costs during my stay
in Italy. She is a retired doctor currently self-employed in her own private clinic in Lahore. Her property
includes one home in Johar Town which is worth PKR and her financial status is strong enough to afford
all my expenses and studies undertaken abroad.

CONCLUSION:
In the light of the information stated above I reassure that my sole intention to visit Italy is for quality
education which is every individual’s right. I believe I would benefit greatly with masters in Engineering
Management from Politecnico di Milano, the knowledge and skills I would learn there would play a vital
part in my vision of being a successful engineering manager one day and will enable me to serve my
country’s struggling economy by creating engineering jobs, which is a dream I dreamed as soon as I got
out of high school.
