METHODOLOGY FOR FILTER MEDIA

BEHIND THE STRUCTURES

As per clause 2504.2.2 the material to be used for filter media satisfying the
following requirements has been selected.

Design Criteria Filter Media is as Follows:

► D 15 (Filter) / D 85 (Base) shall be less than 5.

► D 15 (Filter) / D 15 (Base) shall be greater than 4 and less than 20.

► D 50 (Filter) / D 50 (Base) shall be less than 25.

Filter – 1 (Sand)
S.No. Criteria Specifications Remarks
2–(Agg.10 mm)

1 D15 Filter / D 85 Base 2.14 <5

2 D15 Filter / D 15 Base 18.75 >4 & < 20

3 D50 Filter / D 50 Base 11.43 < 25

METHODOLOGY

The base to back filled shall be cleaned of there is any extraneous material to
its length and width and it should be marked to the lines and length as per
GFC drawing.

Filter media material shall be transported by means of end dumpers to the

site and it should be laid and compacted to the specified thickness not more
than 200 mm.
STEP – 1

The Trimming of Embankment slopes to the angle of repose of the back fill
material as shown in GFC drawings.
STEP – 2

The coarse material i.e. Filter – 2 shall be packed up to specified thickness &
width followed by filling of filter – 2 granular materials of specified
thickness & width.
STEP – 3

Filling of backfill material and compacting the same as per specifications

and shown in GFC drawings.

The above procedure will be repeated till it reaches the level of GSB bottom.
Granular material shall be laid adjacently layer by layer to the filter media
and it should be compacted at optimum moisture content (OMC) by means
of plate compactor or vibrator roller as decided by the Engineer.

QUALITY CONTROL

Quality control for the above work shall be as per table 900-3 MORTH
Specifications. Material shall be checked before commencing of the work.

Base Material (BACK FILL)

As per clause 2504.2.2 of MORTH back fill material shall not be an organic
soil or highly plastic clay having plasticity index and Liquid Limits are not
more 20 and 40 respectively.
In view of the above requirements of the back fill material , the Borrow area
soil located at km. 176+500 (RHS) lead 2.0 km. from NH- 8 (Borrow Area
No. – 19) was proposed as a back fill material and test was carried as per the
specification, the results obtained are as follows.

Obtained results Limit as per Specifications

Liquid Limit (LL) 20.05 40% Maximum

Plasticity Index (PI) Non Plastic 20% Maximum

Max. Dry Density 1.813 gm/cc Min. 1.80 gm/cc

Filter Media

The material will consist of sand, gravel, crusher stone or coarse dust as per
clause 2504.2.2 of MORTH the material used for filter media shall satisfy
the following criteria.

1) (D15 Filter / D85 Base) <5

2) 4 > (D 15 Filter / D 15 Base) < 20
3) (D 50 Filter / D 50 Base) < 25

From Figure 1 : (For Base Material) Borrow Area Soil

D 15 : The size of the sieve which allows 15% by wt. Through it: 0.077 mm
D 50 : The size of the sieve which allows 50% by wt. Through it: 0.11 mm
D 85 : The size of the sieve which allows 85% by wt. Through it: 0.16 mm

From Figure 2 : (Sand)

D 15 : The size of the sieve which allows 15% by wt. Through it: 0.32 mm
D 50 : The size of the sieve which allows 50% by wt. Through it: 0.70 mm
D 85 : The size of the sieve which allows 85% by wt. Through it: 2.80 mm

From figure 3 : (Filter-10 mm Aggregate)

D 15 : The size of the sieve which allows 15% by wt. Through it: 6.0 mm
D 50 : The size of the sieve which allows 50% by wt. Through it: 8.0 mm

OBSERVED VALUE

1) (D15 Filter / D85 Base)

2) (D15 Filter / D15 Base)
3) (D50 Filter / D50 Base)

Base Material Filter–1 (Sand)

S.No. Criteria Specifications
(Soil) 2–(Agg.10 mm)
1 D15 Filter / D 85 Base 2.00 2.14 <5
2 D15 Filter / D 15 Base 4.16 18.75 >4 & < 20
3 D50 Filter / D 50 Base 6.36 11.43 < 25

From the above-observed results, the proposed materials are satisfactorily

meeting the specification requirements specified in the MORTH. The coarse
material (Filler-2) will be placed first along the face of the abutments and
finer material (Filter-1) towards base material.
