PROGRAMME: M.Arch., (Landscape Architecture).

SEMESTER : First

Comprehensive Landscape development for a Residence at Chennai.

INTRODUCTION:

Residential landscapes - the term brings to mind open spaces that are set amidst built up spaces like
courtyards or space that are framed by built space all around as in setback spaces. This is especially true
in the urban context, where in the battle between built and open, built almost always wins. Humans are
also part of the natural world and they need to have association with nature to refresh their mind and
body. Gardens, pots in balconies and terrace landscapes address this need of the people. Therefore
residential landscapes tend to become very important in the lives of the urban dweller. These
landscape designs need to make the most of very little, most of the times. There are conflicting
requirements for activities and space, vegetation and paving, utility and aesthetics etc. The design need
to resolve these conflicts, as well as provide more for them to be good residential landscapes The
volume of the built mass is very crucial in all landscape projects to generate the character of the open
space around. This is especially true in the residential landscape as, it is important that;

‘Integrating a house and a garden and not a house and then a garden’

The architecture of the house needs to be considered carefully when designing the landscape. The
landscape need to take its tone from the architecture in these projects. Planting also has to be designed
with reference to the formation of spaces and the selection of plants should consider the site
conditions, requirements of the clients, maintenance as well as cultural preferences.
OBJECTIVE OF THE EXERCISE: The objective is to equip the students in landscape design both hard
landscape and soft landscape. The objective is also to train the students in designing spaces that can be
used for multiple purposes. Creating spaces for various uses and segregating unfriendly activities (for
e.g., play and reading) is also a concern. Incorporating services is essential for any project if it has to be
executed and enjoyed. Detailing consistent to the overall design theme is important in the perception
of the landscape; hence training in detailing is also a part of this exercise.
