INTRODUCTION
•What is cyclone?
A system of winds rotating inwards to an area of low
atmospheric pressure, with a counter clockwise (northern
hemisphere) or clockwise (southern hemisphere).

VULNERABLE COMMUNITIES
⚫ Buildings are considered
vulnerable if they cannot
withstand the forces of
high winds.
⚫ Generally the light weight
structures with wood
frames, especially older
buildings where wood has
been deteriorated and
weakened the walls.
⚫ Houses made of
unreinforced or
poorly-constructed
4 concrete blocks are also 8/15/2019 4
vulnerable
HOW HIGH WINDS DAMAGE BUILDINGS
⚫ The walls of the building are pulled apart by winds moving
swiftly around and over the building .

FAILURES
⚫ CATASTROPHIC ⚫ COMPONENT FAILURES
FAILURES Roof sheeting, Roof
Foundations, steel tiles, Rafters, Window
frames, Masonry and doors, walls.
houses,Timber

concrete frames.

DAMAGING EFFECTS OF CYCLONE ON HOUSES
(cont..)
• Due to high wind pressure the improper connection of
the house to the footings it can blown away
7
8/15/2019 7
Light weight verandah roofs are more possible to
damage due to high wind speed
When cyclones are with heavy rain for long duration the
building cab be damage due to flood also. Building
contents spoiled due to rain when roofing sheets fly
away

DESIGN WIND SPEED AND PRESSURES
(cont..)
⚫ The basic wind speed is reduce due to
following factors.
9
8/15/2019 9
⚫ Some typical effects of openings in the walls
by attacks of wind.
10
8/15/2019
10
⚫ Failures of the wall
⚫ Overturning

•CHOOSING SITE FOR HOUSES (cont..)
Shielding of houses by
hillock
12
8/15/2019 12
No shielding from
high wind due to
absence of barriers
and shielding by
permeable barriers
Construction at
ground level and
on stilts
13
8/15/2019 13
DESIGN OF THE HOUSE
⚫ Shape is simple,
compact,
symmetrical
Square plan is
better than
rectangle and L-
shape
Row planning
creates wind and
14 zigzag planning
8/15/2019
avoids wind 14
ROOFS (cont..)
⚫ Avoid low
pitched roofs and
over hangings
⚫ Roof pitch
should not less
than 22degree
15
8/15/2019 15
(CONT..)
⚫ Avoid overhangs,
build verandah.
⚫ It should be more
than 18 inches
16
8/15/2019 16
⚫ Securing ridges
Collar tiles
Gussets
Metal straps
17
8/15/2019 17
⚫ Use 24 gauge
galvanized sheet,
provide maximum
spacing
⚫ Fixing for sheeting
by screws and nails
18
8/15/2019 18
FOUNDATIONS
⚫ It transfers all weights of structures to
ground
19
8/15/2019 19
MAIN TYPE OF FOUNDATIONS
⚫ Slab foundaion
⚫ Strip foundation
⚫ Stepped
foundation
⚫ Pile foundation
⚫ Pad foundation
20 8/15/2019
20
WALL OPENINGS
⚫ The openings
provide for light and
ventilations.
⚫ Opening should
have strong
closing/locking
arrangement
21
8/15/2019 21
GLASS PANES
⚫ To reduce the cyclone effects provide designed
thicker glass panes with small dimensions.
⚫ Glass panes can be strengthened by pasting
thin paper strips, it will reduce their vibrations
