 Use of scientific calculator is allowed.

 No clarifications will b entertained during the examination.
 Answer to each question must start on a new page.
 Answer to all the sub-part of a question should appear together.
 The class notes are allowed in the exam.

Q.1 Are the following functions analytic? (10)

a) f(z) = iz𝑧̅
b) f(z) = e-2x(cos 2y – i sin 2y)
c) f(z) = Rz(z2) – i Im(z2)
d) f(z) = i/z8
e) f(z) = 1/(z – z5)

Q.2 Determine the a and b so that the function is harmonic and find a harmonic conjugate. (10)
Marks
a) u = excos av
b) u = ax3 + bxy

Q. 3 Solve the following Sturm-Liouville problem for both 𝜆 1/4 and 𝜆 1/4 and find the
eigen values. (15)

Q. 4 Consider a chemical reaction (𝑟 𝑘𝑐 ) between two disks like surfaces. The following
are the governing partial differential equation along with the boundary conditions. Use the
separation of variable approach to solve partial differential equation. (25)

𝑟 𝜕𝑟 𝜕𝑟 𝜕𝑧

Boundary conditions are as follows:

(i) 𝑟 𝑅 ; 𝑐 𝑐
(ii) 𝑟 0; 0
(iii) 𝑧 0; 0
(iv) 𝑧 𝛿; 𝐷 𝑘𝑐

Q. 5 Consider a porous catalyst (pore diameter is much lower than the diameter of catalyst so the
curvature effect is negligible) where the solute transport occurs by diffusion and chemical
reactions. The following partial differential equation and boundary conditions can be written
after simplifying the complexity of the problem using bunch of assumptions. (20)

𝜕𝑐 𝜕 𝑐
𝐷 𝑘 1 2𝑐
𝜕𝑡 𝜕𝑥

Perform the linear stability analysis of the system and put forward the criterion for stability in
terms of D and k.
