SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES TO MEET GOALS:

 Review the first Act of Hamlet and identify the main plot.

 Develop an understanding of the literary language and techniques Shakespeare uses

 Characterize the main characters

OHIO LEARNING STANDARD Grade 9-10:

RL.9-10.3 Analyze how complex characters (e.g., those with multiple or conflicting motivations)

develop over the course of a text, interact with other characters, and advance the plot or

develop the theme.

MOTIVATIONAL TECHNIQUES:

Incorporate short videos in the lecture, mini activities, and small group competition.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

Worksheet packet, power point, pens/pencils, notebook, textbook

PROCEDURE FOR THE LESSON:

 Survey for initial understanding of previous reading with a couple of questions.

 Lecture off of the power point regarding Act 1 of Hamlet

 Create an initial characterization chart in notes for the main characters

 Introduce the theme of madness in Shakespeare

 Divide class into small groups for closing activity

ACADEMIC LANGUAGE:

Soliloquy, revenge tragedy, themes, characterization, hypothesis, theme, character foils


ASSESSMENT METHODS:

Ensure students fill out the worksheets and take notes during and after the lecture. Students will

present their small group activity together.

EVALUATION OF FIELD EXPERIENCE STUDENT’S PERFORMANCE:

Despite a couple of initial setbacks, the lesson went very well! The day I gave the lesson

there was a substitute teacher present and we could not sign onto the smartboard to upload my

power point from my pdf. So, instead I used the whiteboard feature and loosely reconstructed the

slides for note taking purposes. Thankfully I still had my handouts with all the activities on them.

The students were attentive and took notes throughout the lecture. This particular class is rather

shy and typically won’t ask questions. However, they responded really well to the small group

activity and all the students participated. Each group submitted their hypotheses for the

characters and there will be a small competition over the unit to see who had the best guess. Next

time I would definitely ensure I was able to utilize the classroom technology. However, in a

more prolonged classroom setting, I would most likely give the lecture as we read through the

text. The activities would serve as a review and fun break from the formal reading and note

taking.
