4 Culture Essay

3.7.7 Determine personal contributions to working with culturally diverse

communities

Have you noticed when looking into classrooms that every individual is not the

same? They all have their own differences. Classrooms are starting to become more

and more diverse, so teachers need to find ways to make the settings better for

everyone and their culture. Culture may be defined in several different ways. My own

culture can even influence the way that I teach. There are a few things that you should

consider as a teacher when interacting with your students, planning curriculums, and

managing your classroom. You want every student to feel comfortable and have a clear

understanding of and access to curriculum.

Everyone's culture has its differences. Some cultures share similarities, but also

celebrate their differences. Every culture has different traditions and values that are

important to them. In reference to my culture, we are big on family togetherness. Some

things that we celebrate are Christmas, birthdays, New Years and Thanksgiving. These

are times when my family comes together to eat food and play music but mainly just

enjoy each other. One of the traditions in the immediate part of my family is we

participate in church every Sunday and have a family dinner at my grandma's house

afterwards. We also go on one big family trip over the summer each year. There are

other cultures that may celebrate the same holidays as mine or something like it but

would be celebrated in different ways. For example, the Chinese celebrate Chinese
New Year as we celebrate New Year’s Day. They both have parades, celebrations,

fireworks, symbols for wealth and a feast with family and friends time.

When teaching, you have to look at the different types of diversity in classrooms

as in race, gender, learning, socioeconomics, introvert and extrovert. A child with a

lower socioeconomic background could have more difficulty with academics. Children's

poverty could possibly decrease a child's readiness for school because of their health or

home life. It could often be hard because they may not have social skills and you need

those for school. All children could be at many different levels in their learning. All

children also do not learn the same way. Some children may need more help or

guidance to be successful.

The way that I would teach students of poverty would be to let them know how

everything works, give them guidance through everything, and make sure they know

what they are doing because I would want everyone to succeed to the best of their

ability. Some things may be shortened or explained in a different way to certain students

because they all may not have the extra help that is needed from the parents outside of

school. I would even take the extra step in staying after school to help tutor the students

in order to close their learning gaps, or just get extra help so that they can be stronger in

what they do and also be more confident in their skills.

The diversity in classrooms will continue to increase so teachers need to be sure

to accommodate each and every one of the different cultural needs that the students

need to be successful. All it takes is just for the teacher to put in a little extra time to get

to know each and every one of their students. It would definitely make the students feel

more welcome and motivated to be in the class.
