Rational Method / Manning’s Formula

Rational Method is used primarily for the design of drainage

facilities. This relationship is expressed by the equation:
Q = C i A
Where:
Q = runoff from a given area in cubic meter per second.
C = a coefficient representing the ratio of runoff to rainfall.
i = intensity of rainfall in millimeter per hour for the
estimated time of concentration.
A = drainage area in square meter.

Runoff area:
A = C x An
Runoff:
Qn = i x A

Manning’s Formula:
V = 1/n x R^2/3 x S^1/2
Where: V = velocity in meter per second
n = roughness coefficient (0.012)
R = hydraulic radius = A/P
S = slope = h/L

From volume flow rate,

Q = A V
Q = A (1/n x R^2/3 x S^1/2)
