PHYSICS ASSIGNMENT | 1

Chapters Included – 1,2,3,4 & 6 MM : 30

1. State Gauss law in electrostatics. Using this law prove that the electric field inside a
uniformly charged spherical shell is zero. Plot a graph showing the variation of electric
field as a function of distance from the centre of the shell. (5)

2. a) Derive an expression for the energy stored in a parallel plate capacitor. Hence obtain
the expression for the energy density of the electric field.
b) A fully parallel plate capacitor is connected across an uncharged identical capacitor.
Show that the energy stored in the combination is less than that stored initially in the
single capacitor. (5)

3. a) Why do the free electrons in a metal wire flowing by themselves, not cause any
current flow in the wire?
b) Define drift velocity & obtain the expression for the current flowing in a wire, in
terms of the ‘drift velocity’ of the free electrons.
c) Use the above expression to show that the resistivity, of the material of a wire, is
inversely proportional to the relaxation time for the free electrons in the metal. (5)

4. a) Two straight parallel conductors carry current I1 and I2 in the same direction.
Deduce the expression for the force per unit length between them. Depict the pattern
of magnetic field lines around them. Also give the definition of 1 ampere.
b) i) With the help of a diagram, explain the principle and working of a moving
galvanometer. ii) What is importance of radial magnetic field and how it is produced?
Iii) Why it is necessary to introduce a cylindrical soft iron core inside the coil of a
galvanometer? iv) Increasing the current sensitivity of a galvanometer may not
necessarily increase its voltage sensitivity. Justify the statement. (10)

5. a) Define Mutual Induction and write its SI units.

b) Derive an expression for the mutual inductance of two long co-axial solenoids of
same length wound one over the other.
c) In an experiment, two coils C1 and C2 are placed close to each other. Find out the
expression for the emf induced in the coil C1 due to a change in the current through
the coil C2. (5)
