AIM
TO STUDY THE EFFECT OF
COLDRINK ON EGG SHELL
AND BONES

INTRODUCTION
An eggshell is made mostly of Calcium Carbonate – not
entirely unlike tooth enamel minerals such as Calcium
Phosphate. It is designed to be porous (can breathe) and
helps to protect the inside of the egg from dust and bacteria.
In the mouth, eating or drinking sugars causes bacteria to
generate acids which can corrode away teeth. Studies have
shown that as well as sugars, sports drinks such as Gatorade
and Powerade have a very similar effect on tooth enamel.
There is even suggestions that diet soft drinks also have a
negative effect on tooth enamel as well as orange juice
(which have other acids at play as well as sugar).
This experiment will document the effect of different drinks
on eggshell.

MATERIALS REQUIRED

 Two eggs
 Two 100ml beakers
 100ml cold drink (Carbonated Drink)
 100ml Vinegar
 Two Bones
 Two rubber bands
 Two plastic Sheets
6

PROCEDURE
(A) For egg
1. Take two beakers of 100ml (mark them 1 and 2)
2. Place the eggs in each of the beakers.
3. Then in beaker 1 add the carbonated drink upto 100ml.
4. Then in beaker 2 add vinegar upto 100ml
5. After adding both the liquids cover them with plastic
sheets and tighten it with the help of rubber bands.

(B)For bone
1. Take two 100ml beakers (mark them 1 and 2)
2. Place two bones in each of the beakers.
3. Add carbonated drink in beaker 1 upto 100ml
4. Add vinegar in beaker 2 upto 100ml.
5. After Adding both the liquids cover them with plastic
sheets and tighten It with the help of rubber bands

OBSERVATION
(A)For egg

(1)With Carbonated drink

The experiment showed that all types of carbonated drinks

are bad for your teeth, because they had an effect on the egg
shells . I used the eggs because they are similar to teeth,
because they are made of calcium just like our teeth. The
cokes discolored the eggs and made them brittle. If you don't
want to stop drinking carbonated drinks then just brush your
teeth twice a day.

(2)With vinegar
Eggshell contains of calcium carbonate, which reacts with an
acid called acetic acid in vinegar. The acetic acid reacts with
shell and breaks up the calcium and
carbonate, dissolving the shell. While the
calcium floats away, the carbonate reacts
with acetic acid to create carbon-dioxide. Hence we see
bubbles on and around the egg.

(B)For Bones
(1)With Carbonated Drink
Many carbonated drinks contain phosphoric acid. As the body
tries to neutralise the acid, it is forced to draw substantial
amounts of alkalizing calcium compounds from our bones.
Many carbonated drinks also contain caffeine that results in
lowering the bone density.
(2)With vinegar
Vinegar is considered a mild acid, but it is strong enough to
dissolve away the calcium in the bone. Once the calcium is
dissolved, there is nothing to keep the hard all that is left is
the soft bone tissue. With some
and you can really get the bone to bend.

RESULT
(A)With eggs
When eggs are added with cold drimks they become
discoloured and brittle. On reaction with vinegar the egg shell
corrodes and bubbles appear on the surface of the egg.
(B)With bones
When bones are added in carbonated drinks their bone
density decreases. On adding vinegar the bones become soft.
