Probe Parameters

 Frequency (f), wavelength ()

 Total number of elements in array (n)
 Total aperture in steering direction (A)
 Height, aperture in passive direction (H)
 Width of an individual element (e)
 Pitch, centre to centre distance between two successive elements
(p)
 Gap between adjacent elements, (g)
Limit of Focusing

Limited to the Extent of the Near Field

 A = Aperture of the array

  = Wavelength

  = Velocity of the test item

 Frequency of the transducer

Example

A =32mm

Velocity = 5900m/s

A = 32mm

Frequency = 5MHz

So:  = 5900m/s = 1.18mm therefore 32²

5000KHz 4

Limit of Focusing = 216mm

Maximum Focal Distance

Calculate the maximum focal distance for the following

1. A=8mm F=5MHz V=5900m/s

2. A=16mm F=5MHz V=5900m/s

3. A=32mm F=5MHz V=5900m/s

4. A=32mm F=2MHz V=5900m/s

5. A=90mm F=2MHz V=5900m/s

4
Beam Width at Focal Point

Beam dimension (dst) in the steering plane at a given

focal distance is given by

4. A=32mm Focus=50mm F=2MHz V=5900m/s

5. A=90mm Focus=50mm F=2MHz V=5900m/s

Beam Divergence

Sin  = 0.5 

2. A=16mm F=5MHz V=5900m/s

3. A=32mm F=5MHz V=5900m/s

4. A=32mm F=2MHz V=5900m/s

5. A=90mm F=2MHz V=5900m/s

Beam Dimension

Beam dimension in the steering plane at a given depth (z) is

given by

Beam dimension =  z
A
Calculate the beam dimension at depth z in the steering
plane

1. A=8mm F=5MHz V=5900m/s

2. A=16mm F=5MHz V=5900m/s

3. A=32mm F=5MHz V=5900m/s

4. A=32mm F=2MHz V=5900m/s

5. A=90mm F=2MHz V=5900m/s
