Abstract
One of the main purpose in conducting this study is to find a better way

to create a product which is more affordable. We want it to be

inexpensive as much as possible to help other people who don’t have
enough money to buy expensive hand sanitizer. The procedure in making
this citrus hand sanitizer is quite simple. First grate 1/2 of the cucumber
then put it in a container. Then measure the ethyl alcohol (20ml), lemon
juice (20ml), and cucumber juice (20ml) and 1ml of glycerine. Add a pinch
of lemon zest for a added natural scent to the hand sanitizer. Mix it and
blend it all together. After mixing, we put the mixture on a clear hard
spray bottle(s). we concluded that the purpose of the cucumber is to
smooth the skin, especially if the skin is irritated. The glycerine is used as
an added moisturizer. The alcohol is used to kill the bacteria in your
hands/to remove the dirt in your hands.
Chapter I

 Introduction and its background

One of the dirtiest parts of our body is our hands; there are plenty of
bacteria present in our hands that we can’t see or notice that’s why we
need to clean it every time. Oftentimes, people, whether busy or not,
feels the need to wash their hands with an antibacterial soap and clean
water. But sometimes, it is inconvenient since most of the time, we are
travelling. Water spills and water wastes are one of the factors why it is
more advisable to use hand sanitizer especially when travelling.

We chose lemon as a hand sanitizer for our investigatory project

because the materials that we need can already be found in our homes.

Lemon fruit can easily be found and its cheaper especially during this
season. It can be easily bought in groceries, markets and fruit stands and
these fruits are good smelling. Another factor why we choose this for our
investigatory project because we want to know if the vitamin C in the
lemon can reduce the symptoms of cold.
 Statement of the Problem
General problem
1. To find out if the cucumber and glycerine is an effective hand
sanitizer
Specific problem
2. What are the components of cucumber and glycerine have which
make it a good hand sanitizer?
3. Can the mixture of cucumber and glycerine be effective as a hand
sanitizer?
4. What is the effect of cucumber and glycerine to our skin?

 Formulation of Hypothesis
Hypothesis

1. We think that the lemon in the hand sanitizer is effective and hand
sanitizer contains a pleasant lemon scent because of the zest.
2. We think the cucumber can be effective in terms of smoothing
irritation and burns in the skin.
3. Maybe it will last long depending on the temperature.
4. The addition of cucumber and glycerine may result a smooth and
moisturized texture when added to the substance
 Significance of the Study
The people who will benefit from this lemon hand sanitizer are those
who can’t afford for an expensive hand sanitizer, and those busy persons
who don’t have enough time for handwashing. It is also beneficial to us
students, as we know that there are a lot of expenses in school and don’t
have time to buy expensive things.

 Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The study will focus on how the lemon, cucumber and glycerine can
be used as a hand sanitizer and to see if the hand sanitizer is effective
and if it benefits to the eco – system, our health and the welfare. We will
be also focusing on the fruit that we will use in hand sanitizer. We will
also test how long will it last before the scent or color will change and
how it will effect towards the skin.
 Definition of Terms
Cucumber - a widely cultivated plant in the gourd family,

cucurbitaceae. It is a creeping vine that bears cucumiform

fruits that are used as vegetables

Anti-bacterial – directed or effective against bacteria

Lemon - citrus limon osbeck, is a species of small evergreen tree in the

flowering plant family Rutaceae

Rind – a usually hard or tough outer layer

Sanitizer – a substance or preparation for killing germs designed for

use especially on food processing equipment

Zest – a piece of the peel of a citrus fruit used as flavoring

Glycerine - is a simple polyol compound. It is a colorless odorless viscovs

liquid that is sweet-tasting and non-toxic

 Related studies
Citrus fruits, like oranges, grapefruit, pomelo and lemons, came from
citrus plants, which are common in colder areas like China and the United
States. Citrus is a genus of flowering trees and shrubs in the rue family,
Rutaceae. Citrus fruits are notable for their fragrance, partly due to the
flavonoids and limonoids (which in turn are terpenes) contained in the
rind, and most are juice-laden. The juice contains a high quantity of citric
acid giving them their characteristic sharp flavor. They are also good
sources of vitamin C and flavonoids.

Hand sanitizer is a liquid generally used to decrease infectious agents on

the hands. Formulations of the alcohol-based type are preferable to
hand washing with soap and water in most situations in the healthcare
setting. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers can quickly reduce the number of
microbes on hands in some situations.

Some researches say that hand sanitizer may help reduce the number of
microbes on your hands, but only in ideal conditions when used as
directed on the package. Michigan State University Extension
recommends only using sanitizer after regular hand washing.

 Methodology
Variables:
Controlled: lemon zest and juice, ethyl alcohol, cucumber juice,
glycerine

independent: Using cucumber and lemon and glycerine to make a hand

sanitizer

dependent: Effectiveness of the product

 Materials

 20ml of pure cucumber juice

 20ml ethyl alcohol
 20ml lemon juice pinch of lemon zest
 1ml glycerine
 mixing bowl
 measuring spoons
 clean spray bottle
 Procedure
1) Prepare all the materials you need.

2) Slice and squeeze 1 lemon to get the juice. Grate the lemon to
get the zest
3) Grate half of a cucumber, put the grated cucumber on a clean
cloth and squeeze to get the cucumber juice

4) In a mixing bowl, measure 20ml od ethyl alcohol, 20ml of pure

lemon juice, 20 ml of cucumber juice
5) Add a pinch of lemon zest and transfer to a clean spray bottle

Chapter IV
 Presentation of Data Analysis and Interpretation of Data

First trial:
this is the result on our first trial:

Lemon and cucumber

Scent Very mild
Texture A bit sticky
Color Light Yellow-light green
Description:
We determine that the scent was very mild by testing it on our
hands and smelling it after it dry, for the texture we also let the
hand sanitizer dry first before testing if it is smooth or not. The
color of the hand sanitizer was light yellow to light green
because of the lemon juice and cucumber juice.

Second trial
this is the result of our second trial:
Lemon cucumber with
glycerine
Scent Strong
Texture Smooth
Color Light yellow-light green
Description:

On our second trial, we interviewed grade 7 students.

According to them, the texture of our hand sanitizer is not
sticky anymore. Out of 30 grade 7 students that we
interviewed, 17 of them said that the scent is strong, while 13
of them said that the scent is mild. All of them agreed that the
texture is smooth

 Result
In the first criteria, the users find our sanitizer to be
effective, yet sticky and very mild scented in the
second criteria, the users find our sanitizer to be
much more effective since they actually smelled the
scent of the lemon and touch the softness of their
smooth and moisturized skin are from the glycerine
and cucumber. The ethyl alcohol served as an
antibacterial to our hand sanitizer
Chapter V
 Summary, Conclusion, and Recommendation
1. Summary
our hand sanitizer has been proven effective since it has helped,
together with the ethyl alcohol, in eliminating unwanted germs,
bacteria and microbes in our hands.
Using lemon in our hand sanitizer has also proven effective since
it acted as our antibacterial spray which is a great addition to our
cucumber and ethyl alcohol mixture. The lemon scent is also a
plus since we all want our hands smelling fresh and clean all the
time. The positive benefit of this is that the fresh fruity scent will
last for a day.
The use of cucumber to our hand sanitizer has been proven
effective since it smooth irritated skin. adding a small amount of
glycerine is also proven effective and wise since it is an emollient
therefore it can heal and moisturize rough and dry skin
2. Conclusion
Based on our research and study, we have concluded that the
lemon in our hand sanitizer is effective and useful since the users
can derive great benefits from it. There are no ill-side effects to
our hand sanitizer and we can also conclude that the change in
color in our hand sanitizer can happen during the 2nd month,
depending upon the temperature of the environment. If stored
in room temperature, the natural color will stay for two months,
for colder areas, it can last longer. We can finally conclude that
the use and addition of the cucumber and glycerine in our hand
sanitizer is effective in its moisturizing, smoothing and healing
abilities. Finally, as one of our main targets in conducting this
research, we can conclude that this product is inexpensive and
really affordable.
3. Recommendation
As further guide for other researchers, they may consider
adding more proportions of pure lemon and cucumber
juice to make your hand sanitizer more effective we also
recommend adding right amount of glycerine. Adding too
much can make your hand sanitizer too sticky.
We also recommend testing and conducting this project
in different areas with different temperatures.
We also recommend practicing this research not just
enclosed within the student body, but also to other
members of the society, e.g. the janitors, school guards,
school service drivers and conductors to know more on
how this product can be further improved.
Using knives and other cutting materials must have an
older and experienced supervision to avoid accidents.
We also recommend getting large lemon fruit because
the smaller ones don’t produce enough lemon juice,
which is very insufficient when adding it to the mixture.
