“PRODUCTION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF KAMIAS (Averrhoa Bilimbi) SANITIZER AS

ALTERNATIVE FOR COMMERCIAL HAND SANITIZER”

Kamias is the Filipino name for a tree scientifically known as Avrerrhoa Bilimbi. It is known as

the cucumber or sorrel tree. Kamias is not as widely known as other tropical fruits, but

according to USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) it is gaining recognition in many

countries. Kamias nutritional and medicine value is common knowledge. The sour fruit is a

natural source of Vitamin B and C, iron, phosphorus, and antioxidants. One of nature’s

unappreciated fruit is the Kamias (Averrhoa Bilimbi). The leaves of Kamias relieve coughing,

thrush, hemorrhoids, stings, itches, pimples and skin irritations. It can control gastrointestinal

bleeding in the stomach, fight cholesterol, fever and inflammation and is also antibacterial. The

juice from Kamias can be used for household purposes, like cleaning and bleaching because it is

rich in oxalic acid. Kamias juice can act as a mordant, an essential component of fabric dyes that

actually sets the colors onto the fabric. Averrhoa Bilimbi holds great value in the

complementary and alternative medicine as evidenced by the substantial amount of research

on it. Washing of hand is utmost important to reduce the microbial contamination in hospital,

laboratories, toiletries, and at home. The most common use to disinfect the hands is to it with

clean water. However, the water used may not be safe at all the times and therefore the use of

soap and detergents have been introduced in addition to water. In recent times the hand

sanitizer have been introduced in the market which claims to have great bacterial activity and

safe for use. The alcohol based hand sanitizer claims kills 99.99% microorganisms including the

resistant form (Valencia 2016).

However, the supply of this product are limited and other supplies of sanitizer must be

explored. Nowadays, alcohol is more popular than sanitizer and the fruition and expiration of

kamias is uncertain. One and a half dozen of Kamias is available in 250 ml of sanitizer because it

can be more effective.

This study will determine the process in producing hand sanitizer using Kamias (Averrhoa

Bilimbi), and it’s benefits and disadvantages. Also, to produce a sanitizer that are convenient

portable, easy to use, and not time consuming.

The importance of this study is to be able to make a Kamias Hand Sanitizer , which

researchers foundout to be an Antibacterial which can destroy microorganisms that is

commonly present on the hands. The researchers will determine if the product will

be feasible for the said actions on hands. Since this study deals with the skin of individual,

anyone are allowed to use it, especially those who has a sensitive skin.

This study was limited, which started on June 2019 to March 2020 at Pantabangan National

High School. Specifically, it evaluates the effectiveness of Kamias (Averrhoa Bilimbi) as a
