BRIGADA ESKWELA 2019

May 20,-25, 2019
ACCOMPLISHMENT REPORT

As one of the principles of teaching, environment plays a big part in students’ learning. And
so, if classrooms are not conducive to learning because of poor condition and some defective school
facilities, education is impeded.

The Department of Education conducted this year’s Brigada Eskwela, also known as the
National Schools Maintenance Week on May 20-25, 2019 where all education stakeholders
contributed their time, effort and resources in ensuring that the school facilities are ready in time for
the school opening on June 3.

Prior to the kick-off celebration of BE2019, we were already convened and had discussed
agendas concerning the conduct of the said BE. We were tasked to think and contribute programs in
line with the conduct of it. Meanwhile, as early as March, Dr. Natividad B. Reyes, principal III and
teachers of Santiago National High School recruited and invited volunteers who would participate in
the brigade. Parents, school alumni and other people from the community were encouraged to join
the week - long annual program. Since there are no existing funds for the conduct of BE 2019, SNHS
teachers were tapped to solicit donations to cover the effort of repair and maintenance of the school
and facilities. It was on Summer Break (May) when the school physical facilities coordinator and
some PTA president , Pastor Mervin Ancheta and other members performed a school ocular to
identify the school facilities that need repair and maintenance. After this, the different committees
headed by each chairman planned different school’s activities for Brigada Eskwela .

On the first day of the much-awaited BE 2019- May 20, we conducted the “Walk for a Cause”
@ 6:30 am. We actively walked on the routes of the parade from the school to the town proper. We
were joined by the Philippine National Police (PNP), students, parents and stakeholders in the
conduct of the Brigada Kick-off . Just after the said event, we then started the “Opening Program”. I
was tasked to be the host of the event. During the program, we had our “Health Zumba” which was
participated by all parents, teachers and students. The presence of different groups of volunteers
was acknowledged. Short orientation about the mechanics of the 6-day activity was given by Mr.
Joseph Dulatre. Finally the opening of the Brigada Eskwela was announced. The very eager, ready
and able brigade included zealous teachers, enthusiastic parents, excited students, and other concern
people of the community. Professional help such as carpenters, welders, masons and painters was
provided by some generous benefactors to assist in reconstructing some of the classrooms. One
major project donated to the school by the ChinaBank Savings was the provision of construction
materials such as cements needed in the repair and construction of buildings. Among the minor
activities are repainting of the classrooms’ walls, ceilings, doors, windows and window grills, repair
of desks, armchairs and cabinets. Cleaning of the school surroundings and rehabilitation of the school
garden were assigned to some mothers who found true enjoyment in doing their tasks. All the
members of the brigade worked tirelessly for one week. They did all that and more with an enviable
spirit of camaraderie and unity amid the strong heat under the sun.

The activities that were undertaken were the following:

 Day 1 (May 20, 2019) – Walk for a Cause, Health Zumba, Opening Program and
Information Drive Against Insurgency
 Day 2 (May 21, 2019)- Turn-over of Construction Supply by ChinaBank Savings, Putting
up of the Gulayan sa paaralan, Climate Change Adaptation Activity
 Day 3 (May 22, 2019) – Medical Mission and Vital Signs Monitoring
 Day 4 (May 23, 2019)- Operation Gupit and Livelihood Workshop
 Day 5 ( May 24, 2019- Nail and Beauty care Workshop
 Day 6( May 25, 2019) – Closing Program

May 25, was the last day of the week long activity. Through the overwhelming support of the
volunteers, the classrooms are restructured and cleaned up. All school facilities are now in good
condition. The school surrounding is now free from tall grasses. Generally, the school is now ready
for the school opening-June 3.
