SUMMARY OF THE OJT EXPERIENCE

OJT or On-Job-Training is the activity of the students wherein they are trained or

prepared to a certain job or career. It is also a requirement of a course before graduation. The

students are assigned in different branches of government of private offices wherein they are

assigned or perform their work to prepare and exposed themselves to a chosen career.

On-the-job training, sometimes called direct instruction, is one of the earliest forms of

training (observational learning is probably the earliest). It is a one-on-one training located at the

job site, where someone who knows how to do a task shows another how to perform it. In

antiquity, the kind of work that people did was mainly unskilled or semiskilled work that did not

require specialized knowledge. Parents or other community members, who knew how to do a

job necessary for survival, passed their knowledge on to the children through direct instruction.

OJT is still widely in use today. In fact, it is probably the most popular method of training

because it requires only a person who knows how to do the task, and the tools the person uses

to do the task. It may not be the most effective or the most efficient method at times, but it is

normally the easiest to arrange and manage. Because the training takes place on the job, it can

be highly realistic and no transfer of learning is required. It is often inexpensive because no

special equipment is needed other than what is normally used on the job. One drawback is

that OTJ takes the trainer and materials out of production for the duration of the training time. In

addition, due to safety or other production factors, it is prohibitive in some environments.

Because I had to comply with the requirements for me to graduate, I had my OJT in the

Taguig City University Dean’s Office of College of Business Management located in the General

Santos Avenue, Central Bicutan, Taguig City. At first I felt so nervous and excited as well. I

thought it would be hard to communicate with the employees there because they were all

professional adults and I was only a student intern, but when I got debriefed by Ms. Diana

Dogillo, the outcome wasn’t so bad. I was able to converse with him so casually; a little like

buddies of some sort. Eventually, I was able to talk to everyone easily and found myself working

harmoniously with them. The employees there might be a little blunt but they’ve been

accommodating and good to me throughout my training duration.

The first day was kind of like the ‘grace period’ for me as a student intern. After a few

signatures and approval from the admin in the Dean’s office and a fruitful interview with one of

the top employees of the Taguig City Universities Dean’s Office, Dr. Ofelia Carague, the Dean

of the College of Business Management welcomed me warmly into their department and helped

settle me in one of the vacant tables for me to occupy during the whole duration of my on-the-

job training.

Since I was not assigned to any specific division within the Office, I was told to stand-by

until someone in the Office asks for my help. One employee did ask for my help; arranging the

official papers by year from ascending to descending order. The task was tedious, but I know I

did a good job at finishing more than half of the task for the day.

I proceeded to getting back to the task I left unfinished the other day as I got to the

Office the next day, but the papers from today’s transactions kept piling in front of me while I

was arranging the papers then. At the end of the day, I feel really accomplished. I was able to

finish arranging the papers, including today’s papers as well.

I was also receiving documents in the different department such as memorandum and

noticeable papers. Ms. Dogillo gave me a few system-related documents for me to occupy my

day in order to get an overview about how to go about with the document tracking system.

Again, no one in the Office asked for my help so I busied myself with reading the documents.

Since some employees in the Office looked as if they felt a little bad for me for only

wandering around the Office (with or without much to do), they were considerate enough to

show me around the Taguig City University Administration Building. It was more like an ice-

breaker kind of thing to get the feel of being working professionals then. It was educational. I

was able to visit other departments, meet other employees.

Observing how the documents were being processed, being approved, and being

released required my closely, undivided attention. I even need to tag along without being a

hassle as they retrieve the documents from the record books and check if the needed

documents are present. The coming weeks had me juggling my studies and training as the

employees from the Office have been asking for my assistance in their work. Entertaining the

clients while an employee has to excuse him/herself for a few moments; assisting in passing the

papers (documents) from table to table; even being tagged along for some field work. I also

occasionally maintain their home-group network for their printers. Doing these during the rest of

my on-the-job training duration kept me busy and my hands full, even really tired whenever I get

home from the training, despite nearly forgetting about my assignments; nearly forgetting school

altogether.

This near-to-real world work experience is something I would want to go back if it’s

possible. The real-life lessons learned, the bonds of friendship shared with all the employees

from the Office, the challenge of managing your own time wisely and effectively; even the part

where you have to multi-task to maximize the tasks you have to finish for the day! The OJT had

me really measure my emotional and physical ability to cope with work and so far, it’s been

good.

I’d say the OJT of this semester is the most memorable yet.
