$) OB%ECTI&E
To determine the molarity and concentration of iron (II) sulphate (FeSO 4 ) using redox
titration
') INTRODUCTION
Redox reaction involves the transfer of electrons, and an acid!ase reaction involves the
transfer of protons" #ust as an acid can !e titrated against a !ase, $e can titrate an oxidi%ing
agent against a reducing agent using a similar procedure" &e can carefully add a solution
containing an oxidi%ing agent to a solution containing a reducing agent" The end point is
reached $hen the reducing agent is completely oxidi%ed !y the oxidi%ing agent" T$o
common oxidi%ing agents are potassium dichromate (' r O*) and potassium
permanganate ('+nO4)" The colours of the dichromate and permanganate anions are
distinctly different from those of the reduced species"

+n-
Thus these oxidi%ing agents can themselves !e used as an indicator in a redox titration
!ecause they have distinctly different colours in the oxidi%ed and reduced forms" Redox s
titration re3uires the same type of calculations (!ased on the mole method) as acid!ase
neutrali%ations"
In this experiment, '+nO4 solution of 2no$n concentration $ill react $ith an acidified
solution of FeSO4 of un2no$n concentration" This reaction involves oxidation and reduction
reactions (redox) in $hich electrons are transferred from one su!stance to another" In this
redox reaction, Fe- is converted into Fe- and +nO4 is converted into +n-" The change in
the oxidation state of manganese in +nO4 to +n- causes a change in colour &hen the

1. urette $as $ashed $ith distilled $ater and then rinsed $ith a!out 586 m0 of
'+nO4 solution, the second rinsing runned through the !urette tip" The !urette
clamped to the retort stand"
2. The !urette filled $ith '+nO 4 solution" +a2e sure the tip is completely filled and
contain no air !u!!les" The initial !urette reading recorded to t$o decimal places"
Since the colour of the '+nO4 solution is 3uite intense, you may !e re3uired to give
a good estimate of the !urette volume"

mass of FeSO4 recorded"
4. &ith the aid of a filter funnel, the FeSO4 transferred carefully to a 56 m0 volumetric
flas2" The filter funnel rinsed $ith distilled $ater into the volumetric flas2" <sing a
graduated cylinder, 86 m0 of + sulphuric acid added into the volumetric flas2"
9istilled $ater added until the cali!ration mar2 (use a dropper to add the last fe$
drops of distilled $ater)" The volumetric flas2 sha2ed !y turning it upsidedo$n a fe$

5. =!out 56 m0 of FeSO4 solution poured into a small !ea2er" 6 m0 pipette $ashed
$ith distilled $ater and rinsed $ith FeSO 4 solution (all rinsing solutions must !e
discarded)" 6 m0 of FeSO 4 solution pipette into a 56 m0 conical flas2 (ensure
there no air !u!!les at the tip of the pipette)

cylinder"
7. onical flas2 $as placed on a piece of $hite paper or $hite tile (9O >OT <S?

;" The titration apparatus $as setup" This solution titrated $ith the standard '+nO4
from the !urette until the end point reached" 9uring the titration, the conical flas2 2ept

TITR=TIO>" The final !urette reading recorded" This is the result of the RO</:
@" The titration process repeated until t$o consecutive titrations (meaning, one titration

g) DISCUSSION
i"
The result that $e got are same $ith the theory said" Reduction of purple
permanganate ion to the colourless +n- ion, the solution $ill turn from
dar2 purple to a faint pin2 colour at the e3uivalence point
ii. The initial and final readings of the !urette is recorded and repeated three times
includes rough titration" The final !urette reading of the titration are fixed to all the
titration" So, the result that $e got in this experiment are accurate"
h) CONCLUSION
From this redox titration la!, $e $ere a!le to determine the un2no$n molarity of a
su!stance that $ent through a redox chemical reaction" For our la!, the concentration of
th solution $as determined to !e 8"65 +olar" =ccording to the listed concentration of the
Fe- solution, $hich $as given to one significant figure at 8 +, our ans$er at one
significant figure had 6D error" This ans$er reflects the precision of the given un2no$n
solution, not our measured precision, as the tools $e used to measure our experimental
value $ere more precise" =s a result, the un2no$n molarity of the Fe- solution $as
determined in this la! through the use of a redox titration"

8" &hy did the solution turn to light pin2 at the end of the titrationE
In this experiment, +n- has a visi!le colour at the concentrations, so the purple '+nO 4
is reduced to +n- it seems to disappear" =t the endpoint, one drop after the e3uivalence
point, that drop falls in the conical flas2 cant oxidi%ed any more Fe - and that purple drop
stays unreacted in the flas2, it spreads out and gives a light pin2 colour to the solution"
" Identify $hich species is oxidi%ed and reduced in this experiment"
Oxidation is the loss of electrons or hydrogen atoms or gain of oxygen atom" It $as
identified that Fe- is oxidation species" +ean$hile reduction is the gain of electrons or

hydrogen atoms or loss of oxygen atom" It $as identified that +n is reduction species"
