English for International Tourism Pre-Intermediate Test Bank

Introduction
WELCOME!
This Test Bank will provide you with materials to use alongside English for International Tourism Pre-
Intermediate. There are a variety of tests to check on students’ progress and comprehension of aspects covered
in the course materials.

PLACEMENT TEST
This test is intended to show whether a student has a sufficient understanding of Elementary level language
for a Pre-Intermediate level course. There are two versions of this test to present options for teachers to swap
tests as needed. The answer keys can be found in the same menu as the tests.

UNIT TESTS
These would normally be given after a unit has been studied. However, in the case where units are not
followed sequentially or where new students join a class, they can also be used to check on prior knowledge.
Each Unit Test focuses on grammar, vocabulary and professional skills language. There are ten Unit Tests,
each with two versions. This presents two options for teachers to use, either if a test is to be repeated or for
large groups. The answer keys can be found in the same menu as the tests.

PROGRESS TESTS
There is a Progress Test after every two units of the Coursebook, which focuses on grammar, vocabulary,
professional skills language, listening, reading and writing emails. These tests are cumulative, so that Progress
Test 1 covers Units 1–2, Progress Test 2 covers Units 1–4, and so on. They focus on all aspects of the course
covered up to that stage. They can help to pinpoint any aspects requiring revision or extended work. As with
the Unit Tests, there are two versions of each Progress Test. The listening exercises are at the beginning of
both tests so can be done at the same time if both versions of the test are being used simultaneously. The
answer keys and audio scripts can be found in the same menu as the tests.

END OF LEVEL TEST

This test comprises exercises on grammar, vocabulary, professional skills, listening, reading and writing, as
covered in the English for International Tourism Pre-Intermediate course. It is best used to show that a student
is ready to progress to an Intermediate level course. There are two versions of this test, with the listening
exercises again at the beginning in both to allow this part to be done as a class if both versions of the test are
being used together. The answer keys and audio scripts can be found in the same menu as the tests.

AUDIO SCRIPTS
The listening exercises for the Progress Tests and End of Level Tests come from the Coursebook, so you will
need the Coursebook Audio CD to use these tests. Audio scripts are provided for all listening exercises that
appear in these tests.

Socotra
Socotra is the main island of a tiny isolated archipelago situated 250 km from Somalia and 340 km from the
Republic of Yemen. Known as the Galapagos of the Indian Ocean, Socotra and the three smaller islands of
Abd al Kuri, Samhah and Darsah, are home to plant life that lives nowhere else on earth.

It is the largest island in the Middle East and is 125 kilometres long and 45 kilometres wide. The majority of
this archipelago’s population of around 50,000 people live on Socotra, many in the main city of Hadibu which
lies on the north coast of the island. A few hundred people inhabit Abd al Kuri and Samhah, but Darsah is
uninhabited.

The tropical climate means the islands are hot and dry. Beaches here are exotic and sandy. The mountains are
spectacular and there are also caves, plains, canyons, valleys and sand dunes to visit. It is a place of such
natural beauty that it now enjoys the status of being a UNESCO world natural heritage site.

There is so much to see here and many inbound tourists enjoy tailor-made eco-friendly tours which combine
trekking, camel riding, bird-watching, scuba diving and other outdoor activities such as fishing and boat
safaris. On a boat safari you will see whales and dolphins and enjoy a different view of the beautiful landscape
that makes these islands so special.

C I don’t know. Can you tell me about both?
A Certainly. There are four bus tours. They are hop-on hop-off services.

A Adult tickets cost £15, senior citizen and student tickets cost £13 and for children under 16
tickets are £6.
C And the guided tours?
A There are several guided walking tours. A popular one is the tour of the old town. It starts here
from the Tourist Information Centre on Princes Street and lasts about 90 minutes. Tours start
at 10 a.m., noon, 2.30 p.m. and 4.30 p.m. every day in summer. The cost is £9 for adults. It’s
half price for children under eight and senior citizens.
C I think we’ll go on the bus tour this afternoon.
A Right. You can buy the tickets from the driver on the bus, or the ticket seller on Waverley
Bridge.
C Great! Many thanks for your help.
A You’re welcome. Would you like anything else?
C No thanks.
A Thank you for calling the centre. Goodbye.

Venezuela – the land of superlatives

The South American nation of Venezuela (or the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela as it is officially named)
borders Colombia, Brazil and Guyana. Its long coastline to the north faces onto the Atlantic Ocean and many
of the islands of the Caribbean. But it is not its geographical location that makes it so special, although it does
have the longest Caribbean coastline of all South American countries.

This nation is full of superlatives but it is hard to know where to begin. In terms of its landscape, it is famous
for the Angel Falls. These magnificent waterfalls are the highest in the world and fall over 807 metres. In the
same area of the country stands Mount Roraima; the world’s highest table top mountain at 2772 metres. On
the other side of the country, near the Andes mountain range is the city of Mérida. Until 2008 the world’s
longest and highest cable car took passengers from here to the top of the snow-capped mountain of Pico
Bolívar.

Perhaps it is now better to simply visit the world-famous ice cream parlour ‘Coromoto’. Based in Merida, it is
the best place to go for any ice cream lover. Opened in 1980, it now sells the most flavours of ice cream in the
world. At the last count it sold nearly 900 different flavours including the expected strawberry and vanilla, but
also strange ones like garlic, egg, and chilli.

There are other superlatives too but perhaps too many to mention. The best thing to do is simply visit
Venezuela and discover them yourself.

W = Waiter, C1 = Customer 1, C2 = Customer 2

W Are you ready to order?
C1 Well, yes, nearly. We just have a few questions about the menu. What kind of sauce does the
seafood salad come with?
W I believe the dressing is made with olive oil, vinegar, yoghurt, mayonnaise, mustard and fresh
lemon.
C1 Sounds delicious. Could I have the dressing on the side?
W On the side?
C1 Yes, on a separate plate.
W Well, it’s usual to serve the dressing with the salad.
C1 I understand. It’s just that I’m a diabetic and I have to watch my cholesterol and fat levels.
W Of course, madam. I’ll make a note for the chef. And for you, sir?
C2 I’ll have the chilli prawns. Oh, hold on, is there garlic in that?
W Yes, the prawns are fried with lemon, chilli and garlic.
C2 No garlic for me, thanks.
W And for the main course?
C2 What’s Beef Milanese?
W It’s beef coated in egg and breadcrumbs, and then fried.
C2 Have you got any meat that isn’t covered in sauce or breadcrumbs?
W I suggest you try the Bistecca Alla Fiorentina or Florentine steak. It’s a popular dish in
Tuscany, cooked in the most simple way possible, with a little olive oil and seasoned with sea
salt and lots of black pepper, then grilled to a medium rare perfection.
C2 That’s exactly what I want. What does it come with?
W It’s served with white beans.
C2 Not for me thanks. I’m a meat and potato man. Can I have a side order of fries?
W Sorry?
C2 A plate of fries with my steak.
W We don’t usually ... I’ll see what we can do. And for you, madam?
C1 I see the tuna steak comes in a tomato sauce. Would it be possible not to put any salt in the
sauce?
W I’m afraid the sauce is already prepared, madam. You could order the tuna without the sauce,
and I’ll make a note of your request for no salt with your fish.
C1 Thank you.

Food for thought

0 __Working vacation__

Executive chef Bernard Morel may be on holiday but he’s still thinking of work. You might ask why this is.
Well, he enjoys taking a holiday where the focus is food. Every time he goes abroad, he searches for the
chance to try something new and exotic, something he can’t find at home in Canada and something culturally
different. So, where does he visit and what’s on the menu?

1 _______________

For anyone visiting Latin America, perhaps hoping to visit Machu Picchu, here’s something to try on your
stop-off at Cuzco. For Peruvians, especially in the Andean highlands, it’s a traditional delicacy but something
animal lovers from other countries might not find appetizing: guinea pig, or cuy as they are called locally. The
guinea pig may be fried, grilled or roasted and in some restaurants is served in a casserole.

2 _______________

On the island of Jeju in Korea, Bernard came across another culinary special – raw horse meat. You can find
this dish in both Korea and Japan, and it is said to be very healthy. It is a tender meat and is a little sweet. It is
normally served raw as sashimi and dipped in soy sauce, with ginger and onions.

3 _______________

In Beijing, a friend of Bernard’s introduced him to Shiji. He tried it and thought it tasted like chicken it was so
tender and fresh. But Shiji is in fact a type of toad. Normally it is cooked and then served with a ham and
mushroom sauce.

4 _______________

The last of the dishes on today’s menu is the French classic, les escargots or in English, snails. This is a
popular appetizer in France and there are different recipes. Snails are often cooked with butter mixed with
garlic, onion and parsley or with chicken stock. Sometimes they are served with mushrooms.

Advice before visiting a new country

These days many people travel to new places and countries. Before you go, there is a lot to think about.
Months before you go away you should ask your doctor what vaccinations you have to have. You should also
check your passport is up-to-date and find out if you need a visa for the country you are visiting. You might
also want to sort out travel insurance.

A week or two before my holiday I tell my bank where I am going and for how long. This way they know it is
me using my bank card. I also make sure I have some local currency and dollars as these can be very useful
when travelling. Not everywhere has a bank or cash machine.

It is also a good idea make a list of all the things you must take on holiday. Make sure passports and tickets
are at the top of this list – sometimes people forget to take them. When deciding on what clothes to take,
check on the climate of your holiday destination and the cultural rules. Weather, culture and religion are all
things to consider as in some countries you must cover your arms and in others it rains a lot but is also hot.

Lastly, check the details of your booking: the dates and times of departure and arrival, which flight you are on
and the terminal it leaves from, which airline you are travelling with and where you are staying. Your travel
agent can answer questions and help you before you go on holiday but they may not be able to do much after
your plane takes off.

C = Carpet dealer, T1 = Tourist 1, T2 = Tourist 2

C: Do you want a Turkish carpet? Best prices in Istanbul!
T1: What about that one, that rug there?
C: Ah, this is a quality kilim, a traditional Turkish rug. This is very high quality and handmade.
Look you can see the special marking on the back. Can I ask, are you from London?
T1: No, Liverpool, up north.
C: Ah, Liverpool has a great football team.
T1: It certainly has.
C: This kilim is the very best traditional craftsmanship. I don’t have many left, so I can give you a
special price.
T1: OK, how much is it?
C: 250 TRY.
T1: 250 TRY? Um, that’s about 88 pounds. No, sorry, that’s too much for me.
C: You won’t find a kilim of this quality anywhere else in the market for so little.
T1: What if I give you 150 TRY for it?
C: Tsk, tsk.
T1: I’ve seen one like this in a shop for 150 TRY.
C: Tsk. Imitation probably.
T1: I’ll give you 180 TRY for it.
C: What about these cushions? One kilim and two cushions for 220 TRY.
T1: 220 TRY?
T2: Andy!
C: He wants 220 TRY for the rug and cushions.
T2: But we haven’t got that much cash. Let’s go.
C: No lira, no problem. We take euros or pounds. Your husband is buying a beautiful kilim for
you!
T1: But look at the colours, Christine – it really is a beautiful piece of work.
C: Tell your friends to come to the Grand Bazaar and I’ll give them a discount, 10%. And I can
give you a special extra discount on the rug and cushions – 200 TRY for the lot.
T1: OK.
C: Andy! If you pay him, I won’t have enough cash to buy a handbag!
C: Ah, if you want a bag, go to my cousin, Zeki over there. He sells very nice bags, at a good
price too.

The largest national park in Europe

The Vatnajökull National Park has been open since 2008. This 12,000 kilometre square conservation project
contains quite a spectacular mix of geographical features, from ice caps and glaciers to hot springs and
underwater volcanoes. Vatnajökull is not just the largest park in Iceland, but also in Europe, and offers visitors
a unique opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty of this country. Visitors also have the chance to learn about
the history and culture of the people living in the park.

Although most of the park lies in mountainous highlands, there are a range of trails for trekkers of all abilities;
from easy to challenging. Trail maps are available at the visitor information centre and from park rangers.

Visitors to the park must remember to come prepared for dramatic changes in the weather. Conditions here
can change very quickly and good communication and navigations equipment is required in the more remote
parts of the park. Driving off-road is not allowed and visitors are advised to contact the National Park for
information on driving in the park before they visit. They can also request a map showing which roads are
open to the public.

Although most of the park lies in mountainous highlands, there are a range of trails for trekkers of all abilities;
from easy to challenging.

Sail away on your holiday

Going on a cruise has become a popular option among holiday makers and we’re here to investigate why.
Naturally, every type of transport or holiday has good and bad points but the beauty of going on a cruise is
that most of the holiday is actually included in the total cost. So, what do you get for your money? Well, your
cruise will include all meals, onboard entertainment and there will be a range of onboard activities for you to
enjoy such as: spas, cinemas, shops, gyms and pools.
Once you’re on the ship you will only need to unpack once although you will visit many places. Being in a
self-contained environment will make your trip easier, especially if you have children: you can’t get lost, there
is a lot to do and you have a range of facilities around you so you can relax while your children play
supervised games, etc.
Every day you will travel from one port to another and you will never have to worry about where you are
going or where you are staying. All you have to do each morning is wake up and get ready to explore the next
destination.
Many people enjoy the cruise experience because they also get to make friends during their trip. After all, you
are with the same people, although you are free to be alone when you choose. Mealtimes are the perfect
opportunity to meet others and you’ll never get bored with the choice and quantity of food available.
Remember, there are no limits to what you can eat.
Basically, cruises offer a safe, relaxed environment where everything you need is at hand. They include your
main costs and also give you the chance to visit foreign destinations without worrying about hotels, taxis, etc.
For families they are ideal and offer a range of activities for children of all ages at no extra cost. But for any
age group, it is clear that cruises offer a good deal and allow you the opportunity to go on day trips to places
you might not otherwise go.

F Hello guys, is everything all right? Are you enjoying the flight?
P1 Yeah, sure. We’re having a great time.
F That’s good. Listen, could you keep the noise down a bit?
P2 Why? Who’s complaining?
F It’s just that you are a big group and you’re making a lot of noise. We can hear you all over the
plane. It might disturb the other passengers.
P1 OK. Guys, guys keep it down a bit. Can I use the toilet?
F I’m afraid the fasten seat belt sign is on now. You see, we’re descending into Madrid soon.
P1 Oh dear, it’s just that I’m a bit desperate.
F It won’t be long before we land.
P1 Right well then, I’ll just have to wait.
F Thank you. Enjoy yourselves in Madrid.

2
F = Flight attendant, A = Announcement, P = Passenger
P Oh, what’s that? What’s that? What’s happening? Why’s the plane shaking like that? What’s
that noise?
A Ladies and gentlemen, the pilot has switched on the ‘fasten seat belt’ sign. Please return to
your seats and fasten your seat belts until the sign is switched off.
P Excuse me ... Excuse me, what’s happening?
F We’re just passing through an area of turbulence. Don’t worry, it’s perfectly normal.
A Cabin crew, please take your seats.
P Oh, no! Oh no, we’re all going to die!
F Please rest assured everything is fine. The turbulence will be over in a few minutes. In the
meantime, just remain seated with your seat belt fastened. We’ll continue the food and drink
service when the ‘fasten seat belt’ sign is switched off.

F Please have your passport and boarding passes ready for ... Excuse me, sir. I’m afraid that
suitcase is too big to take on board.
P What?
F I’m sorry, that suitcase is too big to take on board as hand baggage.
P But I always take this bag on the plane.
F I’m afraid we have a full flight today and we have to be strict about the allowance.
P Don’t be ridiculous.
F I’m sorry but we’ll have to check your bag in here at the boarding gate.
P Well, I’m not at all happy about this.
F That will be €45, please.
P What? No way! I don’t believe this! You’re going to charge me?
F Yes, there is a charge.
P But my ticket only me cost €60. This is totally unacceptable. You people, you overcharge, you
lie, you ...
F Look, the airline’s regulations are very clear – if you don't pay to check in your baggage online,
you have to pay a fee of €30 at check-in. And at the boarding gate it increases to €45. Right?
P This is outrageous! I’m going to complain about this.
F Yes, sir. Please stop shouting at me – it doesn’t help. You can send any comments and
complaints via our web page. Thank you.
P I want to speak to your supervisor right now.
