Exercise 2.1

Use 5 sentences or less to answer each of the following questions.

1. Give an example of a pattern that occurs in nature but does not involve numbers.

One example are the ants they walk on the same line and follow each other.

2. Use the golden ratio to divide the line segment L with length of 12 units into two segments L1 and L2.
Specify the lengths rounded off to two decimal places.

The golden ratio is a mathematical ratio that is commonly found in nature. The equation of the
𝑎 𝑎+𝑏
golden ratio is = = 1.618. The only given is the 12 units so it is L1 it will be divided to the golden
𝑏 𝑎
ratio to find the line segment. When you have found the answer in L1 it will be divided to the golden
ratio to find the answer in L2.
12
L1 =
1.618
L1 = 7.416 The answer will be rounded off in to two decimal places, so the answer will be 7. 42
7.416
L2 =
1.618
L2 = 4.583 The answer will be rounded off in to two decimal places, so the answer will be 4.58

3. Construct a logarithmic spiral using golden triangles with isosceles side of length 3 units.
4. Construct a logarithmic spiral using golden rectangles with sides measuring 4 units.

5. Assess the symmetry of your body measurements by computing the proportions of your body using
phi. Do the same with your facial measurements.

A. The measurement the elbow from the tip of your hands that is equivalent to 16. Use the
golden ratio to find the L1 and L2.

Measurements:

L1 (arm)
16
L1 =
1.618
L1 = 9.889 or 9.89

L2 (hands)
9.889
L2 =
1.618
L2 = 6.112 or 6.11
B. The measurement of my height is equivalent to 64.8 feet. I use the golden ratio to find the
measurements of my waist to feet and waist to head.
Measurements:

L1 (waist to feet)
64.8
L1 =
1.618

L1 = 40.049 or 40.05

L2 (waist to head)
40.049
L2 =
1.618
L2 = 27.252 or 27.25

C. I find the measurement of the Length and Width of my face and so on.

Measurements:

(head to nose)
7.5
L1 =
1.618
L1 = 4.635 or 4.64

(nose to chin)
4.635
L2=
1.618
L2 = 2.864 or 2.86

(width of head)
11
L1 =
1.618

L1 = 6.79
