Dietary Analysis Macronutrients
ASSESSING YOUR PROTEIN INTAKE
DRI table, other standards for intake (Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2015) are on CANVAS
in the folder for this exercise.
Having collected data on your food intake and activity you can now examine your intake of these
nutrients and compare them with current nutritional recommendations. Use the Reports analysis
created in iProfile to answer the following questions concerning your protein dietary patterns.
Data for analysis can be found in the following Reports from iProfile
1. Macronutrient Distribution
2. Intake compared to DRI Complete View
3. Intake Spreadsheet
4. Single Nutrient
1. (4 pts) What was your 3 day average total calorie intake? _______________(from energy
balance report)
Protein grams/day
3. (5 pts) Calculate the percentage of your total intake calories that is contributed by protein? Show
your calculation
4. (4 pts) What is the recommended intake AMDR range of protein as a per cent of total dietary
calories?
(2 pts) What percent of the protein DRI “Based on Body Weight” for your age and gender did you
consume? Where you above or below the DRI recommendation in grams Based on Body Weight?
B) If your protein intake was below the DRI “Based on Body Weight” what metabolic effect
would this have on your body protein?

7. (6 pts) Examine your food consumption record and determine if most of your protein came from
animal or plant sources.
Primary Source Animal __ (answer Part A) Primary Source Plant __(answer Part B)
(15 pts) Using your iProfile data record (Single Nutrient or Intake spreadsheet) list the protein
content and saturated fat content of the 5 foods that provided the most protein in your diet.
(7 pts) Is there a relationship between the protein choices you made and the saturated fat intake?
(3 pts) If your animal protein is all of high quality a general guideline suggests that no more than 20
percent of your protein need come from this source. What effect would lowering your protein
intake from animal sources have on the fat intake of your diet.
NO EFFECT _____ LOWER FAT INTAKE _____ INCREASE FAT INTAKE _____
(7 pts) If you lowered your animal protein intake what would you substitute in your diet? Briefly
explain what and why.

B. (PLANT PROTEIN PRIMARY SOURCE) (do not answer if you answered part A)
(15 pts) Using your iProfile data record (Single Nutrient or Intake spreadsheet) list the plant protein
content content of the 5 foods that provided the most protein in your diet. Also list the limiting
amino acid for this plant protein type (grain, nuts etc). Note that soy and the grains amaranth and
quinoa would be considered complete proteins so can be listed as None for limiting amino acid.
(2 pts) Did you consume any animal protein (eggs, dairy)? Yes______ No _________
(8 pts) Would you need to use complementary proteins in your diet if you consumed eggs or dairy
products? Explain.
(3 pts) If your entire source of protein is of plant origin, is your diet using complimentary protein
sources?
(4 pts) Which of the plant proteins in the above table complement one another?

ADDITIONAL PROTEIN INTAKE NEED
It is recommended that athletes consume 1.0 to 2.0 grams of protein/kg body weight/day, depending
upon level and type of activity. Additionally women who are pregnant or lactating have an
additional protein need. The amount of additional protein intake is listed below.
8. Consider your own personal athletic activity. In which of the categories below would you
belong.
Sedentary DRI is 0.8 g/kg/day
Recreational athletes: 0.8 –1.0 g/kg/day
Strength athletes: 1.2–1.7 g/kg/day
Endurance athletes: 1.2–1.4 g/kg/day
Ultra endurance athletes: 1.2–2.0 g/kg/day
Based on your chosen athletic category calculate your recommended protein intake. Show
calculations for credit. (NOTE If your category was sedentary complete the following with the
Recreational Athlete level, assuming you will move to that level)
(5 pts) Is your current protein intake already meeting your calculated athletic protein need??
