Biological Facts

« Winsor McCay’s date of birth is September 26, 1867 and his date of death is July 26,
1934.
« He lived in three places during his lifetime, Ypsilanti, Chicago, and Cincinnati.
« He started working as a poster and billboard artist at the age of 21
« Winsor McCay’s wife was named Maude Leonore and they had two children, Robert
Winsor and Marion Elizabeth.
« McCay’s occupation was an animator and a cartoonist
« His siblings were Mae and Arthur McCay and his parents were Robert and Janet Murray
McCay.
« For school McCay went to Cleary university and Eastern Michigan University.
« Cincinnati is his hometown

Interesting facts

« He is known and called the “Father of the animated cartoon.”


« His two remarkable works are Gertie the Dinosaur and Little Nemo
« He set a standard for Walt Disney with his animated films
« He started about with creating comic strips for the Cincinatti Enquirer.
« He was able to work as a speed-drawling calk artist, after his comic strip, Little Nemo.
« He realized that the same principles used on flipbooks could be used on different film frames
« Mccay produced the transitional points which was one of the most important techniques in
animation.

My thoughts about the work:

I mostly like McCays work. I love all the detail he puts in his work; it makes it interesting and fun
to see all the features. I like how is artwork is surrealistic because the artwork looks real, but
the objects used are not. For example, there is a dinosaur in the city. All his lines are clean and
neat which I enjoy. I think it's cool how he mostly only uses black and white, but the artwork is
not boring. To make texture and contrast he uses different shades of colors and different ways
to fill in each shape. For my gallery I chose his paintings that were in balck and white because
they are my favorites because you can really see all the lines and detail put into his artwork.
