Singkarak Lakes

In a village located in West Sumatra, there lived Pak Buyung, his wife and a child named Indra. They live
in a small hut on the seafront.

Everyday, Mr. Buyung and his wife collect forest products and catch fish in the sea to meet family needs.
Every morning, they look for manau, rattan, and resin, then sell it at the market. When the fish season
arrives, they go to sea to catch fish using nets, fishing rods, or traps.

When he was 10 years old, Indra began to be invited to help his parents to the forest and sea. He is a
diligent child and never complains. His father and mother are very proud of him. Only one thing that
made them uneasy was Indra's enormous appetite. One meal, he used to spend half a basket of rice
and a few side dishes.

One time, the lean season arrived. Forest products and marine products are increasingly difficult to
obtain. This family eats cassava and taro instead of rice. Apparently, this famine season lasts a long
time, so they are increasingly difficult to get food. They must endure hunger every day. Over time, this
situation makes them more concerned about themselves than their children.

One day, Indra complained that his stomach was very hungry. For days they only ate roasted sweet
potatoes. He cried and complained to his father. "Father, I'm so hungry. Can you give me food? "He
whined. "Lazy Boy! If you are hungry, go there to find yourself pampered in the woods or at sea! "Said
his father.

The mother tried to defend Indra, because Indra was still small. However, his father still insisted that
Indra find his own food. Thanks to the persuasion of his mother, Indra went to find food to the forest in
Bukit Junjung Sirih.

Before leaving, Indra first feeds his domestic chicken named Taduang. The chicken is very loyal to Indra.
Every time Indra came or went home, he always crowed to greet him.

From morning till noon, Indra goes to look for food in the forest and into the sea. But until noon, he did
not find any food to fill his hungry stomach. So, he returned home.

The next day, the father again told him to go find food. While his father and mother only slept at home.
They like resigned to the situation. Until a month this situation lasted and Indra felt very tired body.

One day, when Indra was looking for food to the sea, his mother managed to get a pensi (a type of small
shells), the catch with several neighbors.
"What's that, ma'am?" Her husband asked.

Indra's mother, who was washing food, said that pensi was very delicious when it started. He then
cooked the curry pensi, the aroma made the stomach of the father more hungry.

"Wow, it smells wonderful, ma'am. Is this enough for the three of us? You know that Indra eats a lot.
It's not enough, "said the father.

"Then what, sir?"

"Tell you what, let's just eat together while Indra goes to the sea. If he returns, we'll hide this side dish.
The Taduang will surely crow if Indra comes. "

Finally, Pak Buyung and his wife ate the curry pensi very gently. But they have not finished eating, the
Taduang crowed. The husband and wife immediately tidied the food and hid it under the bed. When
Indra entered the house, he saw his parents sitting around relaxing.

"Sorry, Dad, I didn't get any fish at all," Indra said.

"If you don't get fish, what can you eat?" Said Mr. Buyung.

"I'm so tired, Father. Can I eat? "

"Well, you can eat, but you have to wash the fibers first until they turn white," his mother said, handing
me the bundle of fibers that I had just taken from Mr. Buyung from the forest.

Indra went to the river to wash the fibers. He washed for a long time, but the color of the fibers could
not change. Poor Indra, he did not know that the fibers were indeed black and could not be made white
even if washed. He did not know that his father and mother were continuing to eat food with gusto at
home.

Feeling very tired, Indra then returned home. When he got home, he slowly entered the kitchen. To his
great surprise, he saw his mother and father asleep in the kitchen with the remnants of dinner plates
scattered around him. There is no more food left.

Indra was very sad with what he saw. He did not think his parents had lied to him. With tears trickling
down his cheeks, he walked out and caught his beloved chicken Taduang. They then sat on a rock
beside the hut where Indra lives.

"Mother and father have lied to me, Taduang. I am very sad. I better go, because it turns out they
don't love me, "sobbed Indra.

Taduang crowed as a sign that he understood his master's feelings. The chicken then flapped its wings
as if to give a signal to Indra.

Indra held onto Taduang's feet. Then, the chicken flew slowly with Indra hanging on his feet.
Apparently, the stone where they sat was carried at Indra's feet. As the stone rises, it grows bigger and
heavier. Taduang was no longer strong enough to fly with Indra and the big stone. Finally, Indra kicked
the rock to the ground and struck a hill near the ocean. The slap of stone made an elongated hole.
Water immediately flowed through the hole to form a river flow.

According to the story, the flow is the origin of the formation of the Ombilin River which flows to Riau.
Then, the sea water shrinks to form a lake which is then called Lake Singkarak. Meanwhile, Indra and his
beloved chicken are unknown.

Aceh King's bodyguards suddenly beat the young man to a pulp. Because he could not stand the torture
he received, the young man was forced to give directions to the road towards Gasib.

Thanks to the young man's instructions, the Aceh army arrived in the land of Gasib without the
knowledge of the Commander in Chief Gimpam and his men. When the Acehnese soldiers entered the
land of Gasib, they began to attack the population. King Gasib who was chatting with the royal family

Princess Kaca Mayang back to the palace.

At that time the Commander in Chief went to Aceh to fulfill his oath. With his miracle, not long after the

welcome him. They had prepared two large elephants to confront the Commander in Chief at the
palace gate. When Commander Gimpam arrived at the palace gate, he jumped on the back of the large
elephant. With his magic and courage, he brought the two tamed elephants to the palace to be handed
over to the King of Aceh.

The king of Aceh was very surprised and amazed to see the courage and power of the Commander in
Chief tame the elephant that had been prepared to kill him. Finally the King of Aceh acknowledged the
power of the Commander in Chief of Gimpam and handed over the Princess of Glass Mayang to be
brought back to the palace of Gasib.

After that, the Commander in Chief Gimpam immediately brought the ailing Putri Kaca Mayang to Gasib.
On the way home, the princess's illness got worse. The wind was so strong it was hard for the princess
to breathe. Arriving at the Kuantan River, Putri Kaca Mayang asked the Panglima Gimpam to pause.
Commander! I can't stand this pain anymore. Please send my regards and apologies to my family in the
Gasib palace, said the Princess in a hoarse voice. Before the Commander in Chief Gimpam said anything,
the Princess breathed her last. Commander Gimpam felt guilty, because he could not bring the Princess
to the palace alive. With deep grief, the Commander in Chief Gimpam continued his journey by bringing
the body of Putri Kaca Mayang to the presence of King Gasib.

Arriving at the palace of Gasib, the arrival of the Commander in Chief who brought the body of the
Princess was greeted by the royal family with a feeling of sadness. The whole palace and the inhabitants
of the land of Gasib joined in mourning. Without waiting too long, Putri Kaca Mayang's body was
immediately buried in Gasib. Since losing his daughter, King Gasib has been very sad and lonely. The
days of sadness King Gasib deeper. To get rid of the shadow of his beloved daughter, King Gasib decided
to leave the palace and retire to Ledang Mountain, Malacca.

For the time being, the government of the kingdom of Gasib was held by the Commander in Chief
Gimpam. However, before long, the Commander in Chief Gimpam also intends to leave the kingdom.
His loyal nature, made the Commander in Chief Gimpam not want to enjoy the pleasure above the
sadness and suffering of others. He also did not want to take other people's property even though the
opportunity was in front of him.

Finally, of his own free will, the Commander of Gimpam left Gasib and opened a new village called
Pekanbaru. Until now, the name was used to refer to the name of the capital of Riau Province,
Pekanbaru City. Meanwhile, the tomb of Panglima Gimpam can still be seen on Hulu Sail, about 20 km
