Girls count off in descending order. Girls count off in descending order.
Please pick up the trashes on the floor (Students pick up trashes, put it on the trash
and arrange your chair properly can and arrange the chair)

Imposing of classroom rules

I just want to remind you about our classroom

rules:

1. Always come on time.

2. Wear your complete uniform.
3. Do not use gadgets during class hours.
4. Do not eat inside the classroom while the
class is still going on.
5. Pay respect. Do not talk when someone is
talking in front.

Please always bear these rules in your mind.

Those students who will apply these rules will
gain points everyday and these will reflect
your behavior.

Am I clear?
Yes Ma’am.
That’s good.

Review

What have we discussed yesterday?

(Cherry raises her hand)

Yes, Cherry.
Cherry: Yesterday we discussed about
conditional probability.

Thank you Cherry. Gera Mae, what is

Conditional Probability? Gera Mae: Conditional Probability is the
measure of an event given that another
event has already occurred.

Thank you Gera. Kyla, what is the formula in

finding the conditional probability? Kyla:
P(A/B)= P(A  B)
P(B)
Thank you Kyla.

Let’s give Gera Mae and Kyla the “Kwitis clap”.

(Everyone claps)

B. Motivation (5 minutes)

Activity – Group Activity

Today, we will have an activity, are you
familiar to the game four pics 1 word? I will
divide the class into two. This side will be the
group 1 and the other side will be the group 2.
I will only give you 2 minutes for your group to
discuss and a representative will be chosen to
discuss it in front. Did you get it?
Yes Ma’am.
Is the instruction clear? Any questions?
None Ma’am.
Time starts now.

***

(Students start to analyze with their group.)

***

C. Presentation (5 minutes)

Group 1, present it to the class now. (Student answered)

Measures

Group 2, present it to the class now.

(Student answered)
Position

Let us give everyone the “Aling Dionisia’s

clap”. (Everyone claps.)

Now, do you think you got the right answer?

(Some answered yes, some said no.)
All the groups are right.
This morning we will discuss on the
Measures of Position. Measures of Position
has two types of data the Ungrouped Data and
Grouped Data. But for today’s lesson we will
focus on Measures of Position of Quartiles for
Ungrouped Data. In this topic you are
expected to;
illustrate the quartiles for ungrouped data,
calculate the first quartile, second quartile and
third quartile of a set of data and appreciate
the values of patience and perseverance in
developing the skill.

Observe and listen carefully for we will be

having another activity later. Is that clear?
(Students agreed.)

D. Discussion Proper (20 minutes)

We will now discuss the quartiles for

ungrouped data and how to calculate each
quartile in a given set of data.

Measures of Position tell where a specific data

value falls within the data set or its relative
position in comparison with other data values.
The most common measures of position are
quartiles, deciles and percentiles.

Rina, what is your understanding about the

word quartile? It comes from what word?
Rina: Quart Ma’am.
Very good Rina!

What do you mean by the word “quart”

Johmar? Johmar: It means four Ma’am.

Wow, you’ve got the idea Johmar!

What about ungrouped data? What is your

understanding about the phrase “ungrouped (Allen raises his hands)
data”? Allen: I think ungrouped data means
scattered data Ma’am.
Very good Allen!

Ungrouped data are those data which are not

yet organized or arranged into frequency
distribution.

And so, we will now discuss on the quartiles of

ungrouped data.
The quartiles are the score points which divide
a distribution into four equal parts.

Q1 Q2 Q3

 25% of the data has a value ≤ Q1

 50% of the data has a value ≤ Q2
 75% of the data has a value ≤ Q3

Q1 is called the lower quartile or the first

quartile and Q3 is the upper quartile or the
third quartile and Q1<Q2<Q3, where Q2 is
nothing but the median. When we say median
it is the middle value when the number of
items is odd or the average of the two middle
values when the number of items in the
distribution is even.

How are you going to determine the lower,

middle and the upper Quartile of a given set of
data?

We have the so called Mendenhall and Sincich

Method.

It is a method of finding the quartile value of a

given set of data.

First, we have to calculate the position of the

Lower Quartile or the first quartile. We will
use this formula.

1
Lower Quartile(L) = Position of Q1 =(n+1),
4
where n represents the total number of
elements or terms.
 If L falls halfway between two integers,
round up. The Lth element is the lower
quartile value (Q1).

What about calculating the position of the

Upper Quartile or the third quartile?

What do you think will be the formula?

Jose: Since ¼ is the coefficient in the formula
in finding the first quartile then for the third
quartile it should be ¾ Ma’am.
Excellent Jose!

So, Upper Quartile(U) = Position of Q3

3
= (n+1), where n again represents the total
4
number of elements or terms.
 If U falls halfway between two
integers, round down. The Uth element
is the upper quartile value (Q3).

For example, we have the data,

{7,21,7,16,27,1,30,3,31}

What do you think is the first step?

Jayllyx: I think we have to arrange the
Very good Jayllyx. numbers in ascending order Ma’am.

We will first arrange our data in ascending

order.
{1,3,7,7,16,21,27,30,31}

What is next?

Johmar: Find the value of n Ma’am.

Good Johmar!

What is the value of our n?

Jarold: 8 Ma’am.
Allen, do you agree with Jarold?

Allen: No Ma’am, n = 9.

Do you agree with Allen?

Some students say “Yes Ma’am”.
Thank you Allen. The value of our n is 9.
To find Q1 , locate its position using the
1
formula Q1 = (n+1) and round to the nearest
4
integer.
1
Position of Q1 = (n+1)
4

Then, what is the next step?

Zufia: Substitute the value of n in the
formula.
Thank you Zufia. Yes, we will substitute the
value of n which is n=9 in the formula.
(9+1)

9+1 is equal to what?

Rhea: 9+1=10 Ma’am.
Thank you Rhea. Yes 9+1=10.
(10)
How do you multiply ¼ and 10? Pauline: Multiply 10 by 1, then divide the
product by 4.
Very well said Pauline.

10×1=10, then 10÷4 = 2.5

Since our lower quartile falls halfway between

two integers, we will round up or down?
Kent: Round down Ma’am.
Thank you Kent. Do you agree Vinnce?

Vinnce: No Ma’am, we must round up for it is

the lower quartile.
Very good Vinnce.

Yes, since our lower quartile falls halfway

between two integers we will round it up.
Hence, it is equal to 3.

The lower quartile value (Q1) is the 3rd data

element, so Q1=7.

What is the next step?

Kyla: Calculate the position of the Upper
Quartile
Thank you Kyla. What formula will we use?
3
Jayllyx: Q3 = (n+1)
4
Thank you Jayllyx.

To find Q3 , locate its position using the

3
formula Q3 = (n+1) and round to the nearest
4
integer.
3
Position of Q3 = (n+1)
4

What is the next step?

Redgen:
Substitute the value of n.
Thank you Redgen. Yes we will substitute the
value of our n which is n=9.

3
Position of Q3 = (9+1)
4

How are you going to simplify and get the

answer?
3
Trisha: 9+1=10, so (10) is
4
10×3=30 then 30÷4=7.5.
The answer is 7.5.
Very good Trisha!

Since our upper quartile falls halfway between

two integers, we will round up or down?
Keysy: Round down Ma’am.
You’re correct Keysy.

Hence, from 7.5 it is now 7.

The upper quartile value (Q3) is the 7th data

element, so Q3=27.

Since our n is odd, we will find the middle

value, the middle value is 16 so Q2=16.

Any questions? Clarifications?

Students: None Ma’am.

E. Drill/Enrichment Activities (5 minutes)

To further enhance your knowledge, let’s

practice what you have learned about
quartiles. I’m going to divide you into four
groups. I want those who haven’t answered
yet to participate in this group activity. I will
give you 3 minutes to do this.

(Students participated in the group activity.)

Find the first quartile(Q1), second quartile(Q2)
and the third quartile (Q3), given the scores of
10 students in their Mathematics activity.
{4,9,7,14,10,8,12,15,6,11}
Time is up!
May I know your answer now.
Students raise their answers

Do you now understand our lesson for today?

Students: Yes Ma’am.

Do you have questions? Clarifications?

Students: None Ma’am.

F. Application (5 minutes)
I want you to choose your partner and then
answer the problem in a whole sheet of paper.

Is the instruction clear?

Students: Yes Ma’am.
Find the first quartile (Q1), second quartile (Q2)
and the third quartile (Q3), given the scores of
11 students in their Science project.
{25,18,30,8,15,5,10,35,40,43,45}

G. Abstraction/Generalization (3 minutes)

IV. EVALUATION (10 minutes)

On a whole sheet of paper, answer the

following:

Aqua Running has been promoted as a

method for cardiovascular conditioning for the
injured athlete as well as for the others who
desire a low impact aerobic workout. A study
reported in the journal of Sports Medicine
investigated the relationship between exercise
cadence and heart rate by measuring the
heart rates of 20 healthy volunteers at a
cadence of 48 cycle per minute ( a cycle
consisted of two steps).
The data are listed here:

87 109 79 80 96 95 90 92 96 98
101 91 78 112 94 98 94 107 81 96

Find the lower ,middle and upper quartiles of

the data.

V. ASSIGNMENT (2 minutes)
