GED0113 FILIPINO IN THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD

BACKGROUND
According to McMichael (2016), development is “increasingly about how we survive the future,
rather than how we improve on the past.” There is a divergence between how development is
seen in theory and its practice in reality. In an interview with C.J. Polychroniou, Chang (2017)
states that “technology only sets the outer boundary of globalization” – meaning that
globalization would still be possible without technology.

OBJECTIVE
Each group is to write an essay answering the following guide questions.
1. What is the relationship between globalization and capitalism?
2. What are the factors that led to the market-driven society we live in today?
3. McMichael traced the history of development and identified the key areas that led to how
we perceive and understand it today. Compare and contrast development in theory and in
reality.
4. How did capitalism influence the world as a whole? (Economically, politically, socially)

GUIDELINES AND ORGANIZATION

The paper is to be printed with the following format: Times New Roman 12, 1” all sides, double-
spaced, short bond paper, and follow APA citation style. Each member is expected to answer or
contribute to at least one of the guide questions. There will be a peer evaluation during the
midterm consultation period.
