Reflection Assessment #16

Date: 1/23/20

Subject: Research Showcase

Source: N/A

Assessment:

On January 15th, I had my research showcase where I presented and displayed my first

semester work in front of many guests. Leading up to the event I was very nervous and anxious

to get everything done and for all my work to hit my high expectations. However, I think I did a

good job managing my time and gradually doing all the work instead of doing everything all on

one day. I think that by doing this, I was less stressed and was able to enjoy the process much

more. Luckily for me, I was very happy with how my board turned out when I first drafted it that

leading up to the day of the event I did not need to redo the entire board.

The actual event was so spectacular and exceeded all of my expectations. The amount of

students and guests that were there amazed me. I am so lucky and grateful to be apart of such a

booming program. I was able to gain so many great ideas by just walking around before the

event started and just looking at students from other schools research boards. Some of the

creativity of the research boards was super inspiring and amazing. Comparing my research

boards to the rest of the Independent and Study Mentorship students, I was proud with how neat,

clean, and organized mine looked. In addition to my research board, I had my research portfolio

and original work displayed at the showcase as well. I was happy with my overall set up and was

glad that I had multiple visuals guests could look through when visiting my research board.

I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of random guest that came up to ask me

questions about my topic or just observe my board. So not only did I get to show all my hard

work off to my friends and family, I also got to display it to various professional adults.

Speaking to these various professional adults was a good test of my communication skills.

Additionally, at the event, I was able to gain knowledge about other topics and compare my

topic to another similar to my area of interest. From the event I was able to be inspired by fellow

students and guests that were attending the research showcase event.

In conclusion, the event was an amazing learning opportunity where I was able to gain so

many great things. I was able to sharpen my communication skills, gain more creative

inspiration, and most importantly showcase all of my hard work. This first semester in

Independent and Study Mentorship was more challenging than I thought it would be. I had to

learn how to balance a heavy senior year schedule with a professional life as well. All the hard

work and stressed I had endured was totally worth it at the end of the day because at the

showcase I was proud of all my work.
