A} Design of long walls:-

i. Top portion

The bottom portion of 1m (> H/4) acts as a cantilever, while


remaining 1.9 m acts as slab supported on long walls.

At h=1m (> H/4) above base of short wall

Summary: (Short walls)

i. Horizontal reinforcement at inner face

For lateral pressure horizontal reinforcement required is 12mm


Ø @ 175 c/c in mid-span.

For water pressure, horizontal reinforcement required is 12mm


Ø @ 175 mm c/c at ends.

Hence provide greater of two;

Thus, provide 12 mm Ø @ 175 mm c/c at inner face for full


height.

ii. Horizontal reinforcement at outer face:-

For lateral earth pressure horizontal reinforcement required


is 12mm Ø @ 175 mm c/c at support.

For water pressure horizontal reinforcement required is 1mm Ø


@ 175mm c/c at mid-span.

Thus, provide 12 mm Ø @ 175 mm c/c.

iii. Vertical reinforcement at inner face;

Provide 16 mm Ø @ 125 mm c/c at inner face for complete height

iv. Vertical reinforcement at outer face;

Provide 16 mm Ø @ 125 mm c/c at outside face for complete


height.

Summary: (Long walls)

i. Vertical reinforcement at outer face;

For lateral pressure of earth in vertical direction

Provide 16mm Ø @ 125mm c/c for complete height.

ii. Vertical reinforcement at inner face;

For water pressure in vertical direction

Provide 16mm Ø @ 125m c/c for complete height.

iii. Horizontal reinforcement ;

For outer and inner face provide 12mm Ø @ 175 mm c/c.


E} Design of top slab:-

5 m x 18.69 m

L/B > 2 ………..( one way slab)

Assuming 20cm thick with finishes

Self-wt. = 0.2 x1 x 25000 x 1 = 5000 N/m2

Live load = 2000 N/m2

Total = 7000 N/m2

M = (w x B2)/8 = 21875 N-m

Provide overall thickness of 200 mm and cover of 25mm and

Considering the effect of moving vehicles, provide the


reinforcement as double jail i.e bottom face and top face
steel.

F} Design of bottom slab:-

If there were no sub-soil only nominal reinforcement would be


required. However because of saturated sub soil there will be
uplift pressure on bottom slab.
H1= 2.9 + Bottom slab Thk. = 3 +0.3 =3.3

pu = w. H = 9810 x 3.3 = 32373 N/m2

a) Check for floatation

pu = pu x B x L

= 32373 x 5 x 18.6

= 3.01 x 106

Total downward force consists of wt of tank

Assume 300 mm thick slab

Wt. of wall = 0.23 x (5 + 5 + 18.69 +18.69 ) x 3 x 25000

= 814.2 x103 N

Wt. of roof slab and finishes = 0.2 x 5 x 18.69 x 25000

= 468.25 x 103 N

Wt. of base slab = 18.69 x 5 x 0.3 x 25000

= 700.87 x 103 N

Total = 790.06 x 103 + 468.25 x103 + 700.87 x103

= 1.98 x 106 N

Since this is less than floatation force, hence need to


provide projections in vertical walls.

A F.O.S of @ 1.1 is needed

Design base slab as one way slab

Upward water pressure = 31392 N/m2

self wt. = 1*1*0.3*25000

=7500 N/m2

Net upward pressure = 31392 - 7500 = 23892 N/m2

Wt. of wall /m run = 0.23 * 3 * 1 * 25000

= 17250 N/m

Wt. of roof slab = 0.2 * (2.5 +0.23)*1*25000 = 13650 N

Wt. of earth on projection = 17000 * 3 * 1 *0.5= 25500 N/m


Net unbalanced force/m run = 31392*(6.46*1) –
2(17250+25500+13650) = 89,992.32

Reaction on each wall = 89,992.32/2 =44996.16 N

pa= 𝐾𝑎 𝛾′ 𝐻 + 𝛾𝑤 𝐻 = 36548.1 N/m2

Pa = 36548.1 x 3/2 = 54822.15 N/m

Acts at (3/3 + 0.3 ) = 1.3 m above bottom of base slab

B.M at edge of cantilever portion -

= 23892 x 0.52/2 + 54822.15 x 1.3 – 51000 x 0.52/2
