Problem Solving: Solve the following problems and be able to show the step by step solutions.

1. A dead weight gauge with a 1-cm diameter piston is used to measure pressures vary accurately. In
particular instance a mass of 6.14 kg (including piston and pan) brings it into balance. What is the
absolute pressure if the barometric pressure is 748 Torr?
2. In the case of fluids, the local heat-transfer coefficient for long tube and using bulk-temperature
properties is expressed by the empirical equation

0.023𝐺 0.8 𝑘 0.67 𝐶𝑝 0.33

ℎ=
𝐷0.2 𝜇0.47

where
h=heat transfer coefficient, Btu/h-ft2-oF
G= mass velocity of fluids, lb/ft2-s
Cp=heat capacity of fluid at constant pressure, Btu/lb-oF
k= thermal conductivity, Btu/h-ft-oF
D= diameter of tube, ft
𝜇= viscosity of liquid, lb/ft-s
Convert the empirical equation into SI units.
3. Aqueous solution of triethanolmine (TEA) N(CH2CH2OH)3, contain 50% TEA by mass. Find the
molarity of the solution if the density of the solution is 1.05 kg/L.
4. An analysis of the vent gases from the chlorinator in a plant for making chlorinated rubber showed
70% by volume HCl, 20% by volume Cl2 and the rest CCl4. Determine the following:
(a) The percent composition by weight
(b) The average molecular weight of the gas
(c) The density at standard conditions (in kg/m3)
5. The volumetric flow rate of kerosene in an 80-mm nominal diameter pipe is 75 gallons per minute.
Taking the density of kerosene as 0.8 kg/L, find the mass flow in kg/s.
6. A gas mixture has the following composition by volume:
Ethylene 30.6%
Benzene 24.5%
Oxygen 1.3%
Methane 15.5%
Ethane 25.0%
Nitrogen 3.1%
Find (a) the average molar mass of the gas mixture (b) the composition by mass (c) the density of the
mixture in kg/m3 at STP.
