This is England

The movie takes its place in a suburb town in England year of 1983. The movie was released in 2006, written
and directed by Shane Meadows and was based by his own childhood life story. This British drama movie
represents the sub-culture of skinheads. Skinhead is a gang or a group preferably white but with the elements of
black cultures such as soul, ska and reggae music. Shane Meadows had a very good choice of picking the songs
for the soundtrack of the movie. Thomas Turgoose with his well-played performance played the main character
and was a dynamic character, Shaun. Latter that year he won British Independent Film Award for Most
Promising Newcomer and a few other nominees. The movie won as The Best British Film in 2008. Another
amazing performances by Joseph Gilgun and Stephen Graham with their own, flat but different characters. The
movie was a well deserved of the award, because of its outstanding story line and amazing act by the
performance.

“This is England” tells the story of a 12 year-old boy name Shaun, had lost his father during The Falklands war.
He lives with his mother and was not a very well supplied family. After a rough day being bullied because of
his clothing. Shaun was afterwards introduced to a group of teenagers who called themselves “Skinheads”.
They are a group of teenagers who does nothing useful besides smoking, drinking, listens to music, as well as
vandalizing and damaging old houses all throughout the day. However, they were not into the violence. Woody
was the gang leader of the group. He welcomed Shaun into the group and wants to make him a part of it.
Immediately, Shaun shaved his head and changed his appearance similar as the skinheads. Shaun was having a
lovely time with them, but this was quickly changed when Combo, made his appearance. Combo was an old
friend of Woody and was recently released from prison. He had a racist political view and made the group that
was lead by Woody split up. Shaun and the other few of other skinheads decided to follow Combos group, and
everything changed for the worst.

As good as the performances of the actors, the movie had its good special effects. During the violently beating
at the end of the movie the blood and the damage to Milky, on of the minor characters in the movie seemed very
realistic and full of emotion. Although, the scene seemed real the scene was even became even more emotional
because of the body language and the powerful act by Stephen Graham. One of the scenes that I really liked a
lot was the slow motion affect used when Shaun and the skinheads were walking down the street. The scene
was perfect and the song choice that was used was excellent, because it was really well suited. Also, this kind of
a sad background song that was used at the end of the movie where Shaun throws the flag of England to the
ocean was very powerful.

Overall, the movie in my opinion was an excellent movie to watch. I would give it a 4,5 out of 5 stars. It is a
drama film, but it also has its funny moments as well as it builds up the suspense towards the end. Absolutely
loving the soundtrack because of it fits well with the theme of the movie. There were also many quotes and
lines that are really great and very funny. Although, this movie was a very emotional film because, a lot of the
scenes could have actually happened on an actual event. Even though, I would not recommend this movie to
any children under the age of 16 because it could be a bit too violent for them and could be too much of a drama
to watch. But, in my opinion the movie is excellent for my taste, and most definitely would like to watch more
of the similar movies to come.
