Abu  Dhabi  Film  Festival  (ADFF)  announced  the  Black  Pearl  Awards  for  feature-‐length  films  on  Friday
night.   Anhey   Ghorey   Da   Daan   (Alms   for   a   Blind   Horse)   produced   by   the   National   Film   Development
Corporation  of  India  and  directed  by  debutant  Gurvinder  Singh  won  the  Special   Jury   Mention  and  a
th
cash  prize  of  USD  50,000  at  the  New  Horizons  Competition  at  the  5  ADFF  “For  its  visual  style  and  a
poetic  journey  indicating  a  new  and  intriguing  voice  to  emerge  from  the  cinematic  landscape  of  India”.

Alms  for  a  Blind  Horse  a  Punjabi  language  film  is  Gurvinder  Singh’s  first  feature  film  and  he  shares  that
he   can’t   imagine   making   a   film   in   any   language   other   than   Punjabi.   The   talented   filmmaker   says,
‘Anhey  Ghorhey  Da  Daan  tries  to  evoke  the  effect  of  years  of  subordination  of  the  struggling  classes
reflected  in  the  macrocosm  of  events  spinning  beyond  their  control.  It’s  about  a  day  in  the  lives  of  a
family  who  are  witnesses  to  the  play  of  power  equation  unfolding  around  them.

This   is   the   first   time   that   a   Punjabi   feature   film   has   won   an   international   film   award   and   has   been
selected   in   so   many   international   film   festivals,   including   Venice   International   Film   Festival,   Pusan
International  Film  Festival,  London  Film  Festival,  Hong  Kong  Film  Festival,  and  Abu  Dhabi  Film  Festival.

The  filmmaker  considers  the  late  Mani  Kaul  as  his  mentor  and  also  worked  with  him  as  Kaul  was  on
board  as  the  Creative  Producer  for  Anhey  Ghorey...  Unfortunately,  the  filmmaker  was  unable  to  see
the   film   apart   from   the   initial   rushes.   NFDC   has   been   instrumental   in   producing,   co-‐producing   &
funding  deserving  projects  in  India.  NFDC  and  its  predecessor  (Film  Finance  Corporation)  has  funded
over   300   films,   these   films   in   18   Indian   languages   have   been   widely   acclaimed   and   honored   with
various  awards  nationally  and  at  international  film  festivals.  Its  2009  Konkani  Film,  Paltadacho  Munis
won  the  Discovery  Award  at  the  Toronto  International  Film  Festival.
