The Concept of Bed Making making up one side completely as possible

General Considerations before working on the other side.


● Maintain the client in good body alignment. ● Gather all needed linens before starting.
Never move or position a client in a manner
that is contraindicatory of the client’s health.
Obtain help if necessary.

Use terms that the patient can understand.
● Use bed making time, like bed bath time to
assess and meet the client’s needs.

Surgical and Anesthetic Bed


● Bed prepared to ______ and meet the needs
of the patient’s recovery from anesthesia or
diagnostic procedure (lumbar tap).

Purposes
● To provide a bed where patients can be
transferred readily while recovering from
anesthesia.
● To provide comfort and warmth thus
maintaining body heat and there is less
danger of shock and pneumonia.

Equipment
Hospital Bed
● Usually 66 cm or 26 inches high and 0.9
meters or 3 feet wide. Narrower than a
normal bed.
● Length is 1.9 m or 6.5 feet.
● It can be moved to a variety of positions.
● Has height adjustment.

Types of Bed
1. Unoccupied Bed
● The bed is empty and made up, easiest bed
to make.
a. Closed bed - made when preparing unit for
next client.
b. Open bed - the bed is waiting for the patient
in the ER.

2. Occupied Bed
● The bed is made with the patient in it.
3. Post Operational Bed
● Prepared to receive and meet the needs of
the patient who is recovering from
anesthesia or after surgery or diagnostic
procedure.

Bed Making Guidelines


● Wash hands thoroughly after handling
patient’s linens and equipment which have
been soiled with secretions.
● Hold soiled linens away from your uniform.
● Linen to one client is never placed (even
momentarily) on another client’s bed.
● Soiled linen is placed directly into a portable
linen hamper or tucked into a pillowcase at
the end of the bed before it is gathered up for
disposal in the linens hamper.
● Soiled linen is never shaken in the air
because shaking can disseminate secretions
