Manufacturing Technology – II (ME305)

Assignment 1

1) The following table summarizes the key facts about two products, A and B, and the resources, Q,
R, and S, required to produce them.

Resource Usage per Unit Produced Amount of Resource

Resource Product A Product B Available
Q 2 1 2
R 1 2 2
S 3 3 4
Profit per Unit 3 2
All the assumptions of linear programming hold.
(a) Formulate a linear programming model for this problem.
(b) Solve this model graphically.
(c) Verify the exact value of your optimal solution from part (b) by solving algebraically for the
simultaneous solution of the relevant two equations.
2) Use the graphical method to solve the problem:
Maximize Z = 10x1 +20x2,
Subject to
-x1 + 2x2 ≤ 15
x1 + x2 ≤ 12
5x1 + 3x2 ≤ 45
And
x1, x2 ≥ 0

3) Three grades of coal A, B and C contain phosphorus and ash as impurities. In a particular industrial
process, fuel up 100 ton (maximum) is required which should contain ash not more than 3 % and
phosphorus not more than 0.03 %. It is desired to maximize the profit while satisfying these
conditions. There is an unlimited supply of each grade. The percentage of impurities and the
profits of grades are given below.

Coal Phosphorus (%) Ash (%) Profits in rupees per ton

A 0.02 3.0 12.00
B 0.04 2.0 15.00
C 0.03 5.0 14.00

Find the proportions in which the three grades be used.

4) Show that there is an unbounded solution to the following L.P. problem:

Maximize Z= 4x1 + x2 + 3x3 + 5x4

Subjected to the constraints

4x1 – 6x2 – 5x3 – 4x4 ≥ -20,

-3x1 -2x2 + 4x3 + x4 ≤ 10,

-8x1 – 3x2 + 3x3 + 2x4 ≤ 20,

x1, x2, x3, x4 ≥ 0

5) Web Mercantile sells many household products through an online catalog. The company needs
substantial warehouse space for storing its goods. Plans now are being made for leasing
warehouse storage space over the next 5 months. Just how much space will be required in each
of these months is known. However, since these space requirements are quite different, it may
be most economical to lease only the amount needed each month on a month-by-month basis.
On the other hand, the additional cost for leasing space for additional months is much less than
for the first month, so it may be less expensive to lease the maximum amount needed for the
entire 5 months. Another option is the intermediate approach of changing the total amount of
space leased (by adding a new lease and/or having an old lease expire) at least once but not every
month. The space requirement and the leasing costs for the various leasing periods are as follows:

Month Required Space (Sq. Ft.) Leasing Period Cost per Sq. Ft.
(Months) Leased
1 30,000 1 € 65
2 20,000 2 € 100
3 40,000 3 € 135
4 10,000 4 € 160
5 50,000 5 € 190

The objective is to minimize the total leasing cost for meeting the space requirements.
(a) Formulate a linear programming model for this problem
(b) Solve this model by the simplex method
