3. VDI
The procedure to evaluate the vibration behaviour is based on the VDI 2056 standard. The parameter to evaluate the
vibration level is the overall vibration velocity (mm/s) between 10 to 1000 Hz. The applicable VDI 2056 classification for ZR
compressors is determined by the following criteria (cfr. VDI 2056-par. 4.3):
• Large rotating masses
• High-speed machinery
• Lightweight foundation frame
• Low-tuned foundation (i.e. soft support mounts)

These criteria are only considered together in group T.

Z compressors do not completely fit with VDI 2056, because this standard refers to bearing housings that are supported
directly by the foot-supports and not to bearings supported in overhang by a gearbox, such as Z-elements.
Screw compressors generate substantial discharge pulsations that cause rather high vibrations on the compressor casing
without harming the compressor operation. Screw compressors are judged to have a 'rough' operating condition.
If the vibration level exceeds the limit at one or more points (See “5. Vibration severity level”), a frequency analysis is
required to define the problem and the necessary actions.

4. SPM (Shock Pulse Meter)

The Shock Pulse Meter is a practical instrument to monitor the condition of rotating ball or roller bearings. Due to the normal
surface roughness, the balls or rollers generate shock pulses when they roll in the bearing ring. The shocks are detected by
a transducer, making contact with a machined surface close to the loaded zone of the bearing.
To eliminate possible errors due to incorrect positioning of the transducer, adaptors are installed permanently at the
measurement points. The transducer is positioned on the adaptor by means of a quick-connector.
Measuring the shock pulses with a handheld probe gives less accurate results and is not recommended. The signal of the
transducer is translated into a dBc (carpet level) and a dBm (maximum level) value.
Two types of instruments are available:

SPM 43 A
• Pre-set the meter at the specified dBi value (with the inner-upper thumb wheel scale) the shock pulses are
translated into an audio signal.
• Start the measurement with the outer thumb wheel at high dB value. There should be no audio signal.
• Decrease the dB level with the outer thumb wheel until the first audio signal occurs. This is the dBm value.
• Decrease the dB level further until a constant audio signal is generated. This is the dBc value.

T 2000
• Pre-set the meter at the specified dBi value (using 'SET' push button and the up and down arrows).
• Pushing on the 'M' button, the digital instrument indicates the dBc and dBm value.

If the SPM level exceeds the limit at one or more points (See “6.Bearing condition evaluated by SPM method”), a frequency
analysis is required to define the problem and the necessary actions.
