CHAPTER INSTRUCTOR’S GUIDE

3 Activity:
Rent to Own
B Y B R E N D A B U D L E R , E D U C ATO R , N E B R A S K A

Objective
The purpose of this activity is for students to research and examine the higher cost
of using rent-to-own services versus saving and purchasing the item with cash.

Instructor Directions
Hand out the student activity sheet and direct students to a rent-to-own website using a search engine. Be sure
to evaluate possible rent-to-own websites yourself before directing students to visit. Rent-to-own businesses are
often unscrupulous on the web, just as they are in person.

Students will find the total cost of the listed items if purchased at a rent-to-own store. Next, they will total the cost
of the items if purchased in full with cash elsewhere. Finally, they will calculate the difference between the two
methods and calculate a 40-year investment based on the savings.
