Part I: Short Answer Questions

Answer each of the following questions in complete sentences. Each answer should be between

3-5 sentences. For each answer, refer to specific examples from the essay to support your points

but do not use quotations.

1. Explain the thesis statement (central idea) of the essay. Identify at least three main

supporting points of the thesis.

The author states about how overstimulation may be ending up with boredom and therefore

undermining our creativity. At the beginning he indicates that some experts say that our brains

need boredom to be creative because, boredom allows us to process thoughts and be creative; he

also speaks from his personal experience, and how growing up in a little town with little things to

do led him to fabricate his own toys and create his own games; finally, he shows us some cases

of absence of creativity, such as, the rise of sequels movies and reality TV shows.

2. Who is the intended audience for this reading and what is the purpose (to entertain, to

inform, to persuade—or a combination of more than one) for the author writing this

article?

His blog’s audience, his intention is to inform and persuade about what he thinks over the

boredom and its effect on creativity.

3. Is the essay formal, general, or informal? Or a combination?

Informal, it does not provide any formal source at all, and is based on his own experience and

observation.

4. In your own words, explain what the author meant in paragraph 21 when he states, “Still,

it’s worth keeping an eye on the link between our vanishing boredom and our lack of

innovation. It’s the sort of trend that could literally destroy the world without anyone

realizing what the root problem is.”

It’s a call to action on how the lack of creativity due to the absence of boredom could lead us

to the stagnation of the innovation and eventually our development.

5. Do you agree with Adams’ argument (thesis)? Explain why or why not. Use specific

examples to explain your opinion.

No, I believe creativity comes out of a need, for example, everything we’ve created has been

the result of a necessity, we have writing, it wasn’t created because of some’s boredom, was

created because there was a need for communicating something beyond spoken words, same

thing happened with literature, we needed to tell stories to preserve our culture, so it was

born, same with music, among other greatest invention on earth, some of them so simple that

we take for granted that they always have been there

Part II: Introduction and Body Paragraph

1. Choosing ONE of the topics below, fill in the Outline in point form.

Note, you are only writing an Introduction and one Body Paragraph not an entire

essay. You may choose which paragraph to write (Body Paragraph 1, 2, 3), and must

remember to choose an appropriate transition for the paragraph being written.

2. Write an Introduction and ONE Body Paragraph of an essay.

The Introduction should be 5-8 sentences in length, and the Body Paragraph

should be 8-12 sentences in length. The two paragraphs must be word processed, double

spaced, and in 12 pt. Times New Roman or 10 pt. Arial font.
