REVIEW OF A RESEARCH PAPER: LEAD ACETATE FOR WATER

TOXICITY DETECTION USING FIBER-OPTIC VERSION OF MACH-
ZEHNDER INTERFEROMETER.

Bibliography:
By: Sophie Anne G. Belandres and Glenn Mark Idea

I. Problem
Summary:
Toxic in water is commonly seen today specially near factories. Lead is one of the common
pollutants that are evident in water and is very harmful to aquatic and marine resources. Thus,
monitoring it will ease the problem. A controlled set-up in the laboratory using the fiber-optic version
of Mach-Zehnder interferometer is used to measure the lead acetate concentrations.
Comments:
The problem was well - constructed and presented, very evident from the first line and can be
easily figured out by the readers. They emphasized how toxic in water is a significant problem in our
world today. The researchers clearly stated how lead acetate affects negatively to our bodies of water
and they stated that it is very toxic to the aquatic and marine resources. Thus, it is in need of
monitoring to ease the problem the researcher stated.
II. Review of Literature
Summary:
Water pollution contaminates the bodies of water through chemical, physical, radioactive or
pathogenic microbial elements. There are three major water pollutants, which comprise of dirt,
bacteria and nutrients and these pollutants usually came from sewers and septic systems, which are
anthropogenic effects- they exist because of humans’ activities especially in agriculture and industry.
According to one research, the histopathology of gills, liver, kidney and muscle and its accumulation
in these organs of Clarias gariepinus (catfish) were being exposed to lead acetate for the measurement
of toxicity for a certain exposure period, it showed that the longer the exposure and the higher the
concentration, the longer the toxicity. Parameters, such as turbidity, pH, toxicity, chlorine and others
are measured continuously to monitor quality of water. Mach-Zender's fiber-optic version provides
precise movements due to total internal reflection.
Comments:
The literature provided subtopics, and citation for the toxicity concentration of the lead
acetate. In addition, they stated the importance to monitor the lead acetate concentration on the
water. Moreover, the literature also gives adequate information to the toxicity concentration of
lead acetate.
