IV. PROCEDURES
A. ELICIT

The teacher will recall previous lesson on UAM (horizontal dimension).

B. ENGAGE
The teacher will show a short video of Felix Baumgartner’s supersonic fall to
Earth.
-Why did Felix fall?
-why didn’t he just float next to the balloon?
1. What is gravity?
2. What is the acceleration due to gravity on earth?
3. Is the rate of gravity (acceleration) the same for all objects on earth?
C. EXPLORE
Group Activity
Instruct the students to form four (4) groups and each group will be
given with specific task.

Group 1 and 3 – 1000-Yen challenge or 100 peso bill challenge

Group 2 and 4 – I’m free falling

D. EXPLAIN
Process the outputs by discussing the concept and equations used to
describe free fall or uniformly accelerated motion in vertical dimension.

“Free-fall” motion is a Uniformly Accelerated Motion that takes place in

a vertical direction. Anytime an object moves vertically, either going
upwards, or going downwards, we say it is in Free-fall.

There are two key, critical concepts that we must understand when
discussing objects in Free-fall motion:

1. The constant acceleration of the object is ALWAYS directed

downwards due to the influence of Earth’s gravity; the acceleration due
to gravity on Earth is referred to as “g”, and has a value
of 9.8 m/s2. Because of sign conventions, where we choose up to be
the positive direction and down to be the negative, we will say that, in
Free-fall, the vertical acceleration of an object is -g = -9.8 m/s2.
[Recall: the negative sign indicates that the direction of the
acceleration is downwards.

2. When an object is in Free-fall, we will always ignore any effects that

air resistance may have on the object’s motion.

KINEMATICS EQUATION FOR FREE FALL

h= (vf + vi/2) t d= vit + gt2/2
vf= vi + gt vf2= vi2 +2gh

E. ELABORATE
Upton Chuck is riding the Giant Drop at Great America. If Upton free
falls for 2.60 seconds, what will be his final velocity and how far will he
fall?
Given:
g = -9.8 m t = 2.6 s vi = 0 m/s Find:
d = ??
vf = ??
d = vit + gt2//2
d = (0 m/s)(2.60 s)+(-9.8 m/s2)*(2.60 s)2 /2
d = -33.1 m (- indicates direction)
vf = vi + at
vf = 0 + (-9.8 m/s2)(2.60 s)
vf = -25.5 m/s (- indicates direction)

F. EVALUATE
A stone is dropped into a deep well and is heard to hit the water 3.41 s after
being dropped. Determine the depth of the well.

Given: Find:
2
a = -9.8 m/s t = 3.41 s vi = 0 m/s d = ??
d = vit + at2/2
d = (0 m/s)(3.41 s)+(-9.8 m/s2)(3.41 s)2/2
d = 0 m+(-9.8 m/s2)(11.63 s2)
d = -57.0 m
(NOTE: the - sign indicates direction)

G. EXTEND
Maria throws the ball straight up with an initial velocity of 5m/s.
1. What is its velocity at the highest point?
2. What is its acceleration at the highest point?
3. What is its velocity when it returned to the elevation from where it was
thrown?
4. What is its acceleration just before it hits the ground?
5. After 2 seconds, what is the acceleration of the ball?
