INTRODUCTION AND OBTAINING DATA

ALDRICH B. CALINAWAN
COURSE INSTRUCTOR
ENGINEERING DATA ANALYSIS
SECOND SEMESTER, JANUARY 2020

Engr. Aldrich B. Calinawan, RMP, PME ENGINEERING DATA ANALYSIS

SPECIFIC LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the session the students should be able to:

Define Population
Differentiate sample from population
Define data
List down methods of data collection
Discuss how to plan a survey

INTRODUCTION

- NUMBERS MAY GIVE VITAL INFORMATION -

- INFORMATION IS POWER -
How we gather the data and process them to arrive at relaible information must
be one of our major concerns. We should avoid erroneous results. Also, we need
to know the best data collection method for our particular needs.

WHAT IS DATA?

3
INTRODUCTION

DATA
Information collected for use especially facts or numbers, collected to be
examined and considered and used to help decision-making
May be quantitative or qualitative data

3
INTRODUCTION

PROBABILITY
is the branch of mathematics that studies the possible outcomes of given events
together with the outcomes’ relative likelihoods and distributions.

STATISTICS
is a form of mathematical analysis that uses quantified models, representations
and synopses for a given set of experimental data or real-life studies. Statistics
studies methodologies to gather, review, analyze and draw conclusions from data.

1.0 OBTAINING DATA

Collecting and acquiring your research data for analysis and arriving results for
sharing.

3
1.1 METHODS OF DATA COLLECTION

Generally, you collect quantitative data through sample surveys, experiments and
observational studies. You obtain qualitative data through focus groups, in-depth
interviews and case studies.

1.2 PLANNING AND CONDUCTING SURVEYS

A survey is a way to ask a lot of people a few well-constructed questions. The

survey is a series of unbiased questions that the subject must answer.
Surveys can take different forms. They can be used to ask only one question or
they can ask a series of questions. We can use surveys to test out peoples
opinions or to test a hypothesis.
There are various methods for administering a survey. It can be done as a face-to
face interview or a phone interview where the researcher is questioning the
subject. A different option is to have a self-administered survey where the subject
can complete a survey on paper and mail it back, or complete the survey online.
Planning a survey takes into consideration the location, weather condition, sizing
up the potential risk among other factors.

1.3 PLANNING AND CONDUCTING EXPERIMENTS

Science revolves around experiments, and learning the best way of conducting an
experiment is crucial to obtaining useful and valid results.
With an experiment, the researcher is trying to learn something new about the
world, an explanation of ’why’ something happens.
Conducting an experiment requires establishing the steps and procedures. Do not
ever attempt to manipulate the result.

3
EXERCISE

BY GROUP

Conduct an experiment using a fair coin. Assign a tail and a head then conduct
coin tossing experiment and record the result each time the coin lands. The
number of tosses must be between 50 to 100. Do this with:
one coin
two coins
threee coins
four coins
Submit a report of the result of your experiment.
