Fake News:

Think Before You Spread

Have you ever experienced being deceived? Or being fooled by your special
someone? Have you ever posted fake information in facebook, or in twitter? Instagram?
groupchat? Or worst, spread it personally? Have you ever narrated hyperbole and
exaggerated stories? Are you attention seeker? or horrible scammer? If yes, we are on
the same road. The answers to these questions define my life story of about
encountering fake news.

Attention seeker: I was with glee, excited, delighted and as if I was flying without
wings because I became famous on what I posted. Despite of being truth or not, people
believes me if I manipulate information. Just like, if I said I saw a kulto, or I feel creepy
in the night and someone who knock on the door. Would you believe? If I described
what’s really kulto is, like he has an oily body, black, tall and red eyes, or I show
evidences like his footprint and fake images and videos. Is it more reliable? I show
some proof that my post really exists and not just my imagination. See, it is easy for us
to believed but difficult to discern whether it is truth or not because people nowadays
are exaggerated of posting stories in social media, their story are increase-decrease of
information or not new for us the term "dagdag-bawas" in tagalog.

Misinformation and disinformation: There are two ways of disseminating fake

news, misinformation and disinformation. Disinformation is where the information that is
false and deliberately created to harm a person, social group, organisation or country.
Misinformation is where the information that is false but not created with the intention of
causing harms. To sum up, fake can be spread intentionally and unintentionally.

Violation: Traditional mass media has long been the way to spread and
disseminate information to a wide audience and has become vital to our daily lives as
the source of reports and accounts of relevant events happening across the nation and
around the globe. The advancement of technology has allowed people the outlet to not
only read news stories from credible sources but also to create their own accounts of
the story. Indeed, the effect of news should not be taken lightly. Fake news creates
impression and beliefs based on false premises. The Philippines should empower the
Anti-Fake News Act of 2017.

“Think before you spread”. In the age of internet fake news is just a common
problem for everybody yet it provides major impact to our society. Fake news is simple
as to click share button to disseminate information. It’s serves as fun for us to send
humor, joke or hoax to our friend. We must think and be careful of spreading fake news.
Let us check first the source of the story if we recognise the website. Is it a
credible/reliable source? If we are unfamiliar with the site, look in the about section or
find out more information about the author. Check the facts, Fake news stories often
contain incorrect dates or altered timelines. It is also a good idea to check when the
article was published, is it current or an old news story? Check your biases, Are your
own views or beliefs affecting your judgement of a news features or report? Is it a joke?
Satirical sites are popular online and sometimes it is not always clear whether a story is
just a joke or parody. Check the website, is it known for satire or creating funny stories?
Then, if we doubt to ourselves to believe, just observe the information and we should be
evidence based.
