strong. Take the whole responsibility on your own shoulders, and know
that you are the creator of your own destiny. All the strength and
succor you want is within yourselves. We are responsible for what we
are; and whatever we wish ourselves to be, we have the power to
make ourselves. If what we are now has been the result of our own
past actions, it certainly follows that whatever we wish to be in future
can be produced by our present actions so we have to know how to
act.

Unfortunately, in this life, the vast majority of persons are


groping through this dark life without any ideal at all. If a man with an
ideal makes a thousand mistakes, I am sure that the man without an
ideal makes fifty thousand. Therefore, it is better to have an ideal.
Purity, patience, and perseverance are the three essentials to success
and, above all – love.
You are the makers of your own fortunes. You make yourselves
suffer, you make good and evil and it is you who put your hands before
your eyes and say it is dark. Take your hands away and see the light.
The will is stronger than anything else. Everything must go down
before the will, for, that comes from God and God Himself; the pure
and a strong will is omnipotent.

The Work Immersion Program

With the passage of the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 or Republic
Act 10533, the SCHOOL, in coordination with DepEd, is tasked to implement the K
to 12 Program, essentially adding two (2) years of specialization within the Basic
Education System;
The implementation of RA 10533 is designed within the framework of
increased community involvement in the learner’s experience;
With this premise, the SCHOOL in coordination with DepEd offers venues
for various stakeholders to participate in the implementation of RA 10533 and, the
same offer, accepted by the PARTIES herein;
The Work Immersion Program is one of the course requirements for
graduation. A SHS student has to undergo Work Immersion in a business
organization or establishment with work requirements relate to the specialization.

Objectives
Through Work Immersion, the students are exposed to and are familiarized
with the work-related environment related to their field of specialization.
Specifically, the students are able to:
1. Appreciate the importance and application of the principles and theories
learned in school.
2. Enhance their technical knowledge and skills.
3. Enrich their skills in communications and human relations.
4. Develop good work habits, attitude, appreciation, and respect for work.

Part I
Pre-Immersion Activity

A. Values and Attributes of the Immersionist


An individual’s effectiveness in the workplace often depends on his/her
personality, attitudes and values, along with his/her motivation to succeed.
Concurrently, the perception, attitudes and values of colleagues in the workplace
play a role in determining the individual’s effectiveness. Understanding these
characteristics of employees can be very crucial for organizations to operate
successfully. At the same time, it is essential that employees understand the values
associated with the organization in order to avoid any conflicting feelings toward
the work they are employed to do.

1. Expected behavior
a. Work Ethics
Work ethics are a major focus of today's employers. It's not uncommon
for an employee to lose one's job over poor work ethics. If an employee lacks good
work ethic skills, he may find himself seeking new employment. Although
employees may be looked at as expendable, most employers prefer a low turnover
rate. Therefore, in their search for the perfect candidate, not only do they compare
employee's technical skills, but their potential to exhibit good work ethics as well.
Attendance, character, and attitude are just a few of the traits that will be looked
at by employers.
Attendance is a very important work ethic trait to maintain. Going to work
everyday and being on time has several benefits in the eyes of an employer. First,
it shows that you care about your job and you have enough respect for your
employer to show up on time. When an employee creates an outstanding
punctuality and attendance record, it builds confidence in the employer that the
employee is dependable. When an employer has that confidence of dependability
it may be a deciding factor in maintaining that employment.
As with attendance, having good character may be the difference in
keeping a job and looking for a new job. Initiative and honesty are important
values to possess. Having initiative is doing tasks that need to be completed

without being told. Starting new tasks without being told shows initiative as well.
If an employee is honest, the employer is able to trust the employee.
Integrity and loyalty are also important traits of character. Integrity is
always doing the right thing all of the time regardless of who is around. An
employer can depend on a loyal employee. This kind of dependability is important
in an employer's eyes. Also, a positive attitude is another work ethic employers
are focusing on. Having a positive attitude displays the desire to succeed.

b. Safety in the workplace


Most immersionists expect their workplace to offer them a safe environment
in which they can work. It is known that some workplaces are safer than others.
Workplace safety is a priority in for most workplaces that is why employers care
about employee’s safety.
Workplace safety is a kind of management responsibility in places of
employment that includes health and safety of workers.
In order to provide workers with safety and health, managers focus on
safety that can include such elements as: management leadership and obligation;
worker involving accountability; ensuring the work is carried out safely and
effectively; different safety plans, programs and policies, processes, procedures,
and practices; safety inspections for workplace hazards; safety goals, objectives
and program audits; safety tracking and metrics; identification of hazards and
control; safety education, training and communications.
Talking about workplace safety, it is necessary to mention health and safety
hazards. According to definition of Rajagopal J., “a ‘hazard’ is something that in
itself may cause harm or injury.” (Rajagopal, 2009).Workplace hazards include
moving parts of machinery, flammable or toxic substances and lifting heavy things.
Also hazards can be included in slippery floors, electric energy, working at heights
and excessive noise. Hazards are classified as health hazards and safety hazards.
Workplace safety is important because it prevents from getting injures and
saves life of workers. A safe situation is a situation where the risks of injuries or
property damage are low. Safety should impact the risk of death and injury.

Workplace safety is a management’s responsibility. It includes the creating


and compliance of safety programs and policies. Insurance is used in order to
restitute the loss made to the employee during the work.

c. Workplace rights and responsibilities
Everyone in the workplace is legally responsible for workplace safety. The
Saskatchewan Employment Act requires everyone to work together.
The Saskatchewan Employment Act the word "duty" is used to describe
responsibilities. Responsibility is an obligation for carrying out duties properly.
Authority is the right to make decisions and direct the work of others.
To carry out health and safety duties at a place of employment, everyone
must know what their duties are; have the authority, resources, and time to carry
them out; and have required knowledge (education, training, and certification).

d. Confidentiality in the workplace


Confidentiality at the workplace is very important. Virtually all workplaces
have information that needs to be kept confidential due to the Freedom of
Information and Privacy Act. As a student and immersionist, you need to be very
careful not to share any confidential information with your friends or family. The
laws and regulations that support confidentiality come from our collective desire
to protect the rights of the individual within our society. The desire to do what is
right instead of what is wrong is an ideal that is embedded within our society's
code of ethics. A code of ethics is what helps us to clearly distinguish right from
wrong. An example is The Ontario Human Rights Code. Each workplace may also
have its own code of ethics that its members are required to follow. In this way,
the dignity of the work and the individuals within the workplace are protected.
Maintaining confidentiality in the workplace is also important for building and
maintaining trust, and for ensuring an open and honest communication between
customers, clients and employees.

e. Effective conflict resolution and teamwork skills


When a work group begins to work as a team, productivity and efficiency
are increased. Teams not only improve their work output, they also develop the
ability to police themselves and resolve internal team conflicts. A team leader who
understands the various elements of teamwork that assist in conflict resolution can
better prepare the team to take care of issues as they arise and maintain group
productivity.
Equality in a team means that the team develops methods for delegating
responsibility and performing work tasks that are equally effective for all team

members. It prevents team members from feeling alienated from the rest of the
group and helps to build a strong sense of team purpose. Encouraging a uniform
distribution of responsibility within a team helps prevent conflict.
Respect for Hierarchy. A team develops its own hierarchy, designed to keep
the group running smoothly and effectively. But conflict can arise when some
members of the group feel that it would be better served if their ideas were more
prominent in the team decision-making process. The team needs to respect the
group hierarchy to maintain productivity.
Support and Feedback. A team develops its own way of supporting
members and providing pertinent feedback. Without team members supporting
each other and offering necessary feedback on work performance, the group has
no way of improving its productivity. Conflict can arise when group members do
not communicate with each other and individuals do not know if their performance
within the group is acceptable and productive.
Diversity can cause conflicts among team members. Intolerance of diverse
backgrounds can cause internal conflict, and those kinds of conflicts are resolved
by developing an understanding for each other or by dismissing the intolerant
parties. But one aspect of diversity that can create conflict is a feeling of
inadequacy. Team members with more experience or that have a strong
understanding of their job duties can make other group members feel inadequate.

f. Work immersion rules and regulations


SHS students regardless of age shall not be allowed for work immersion in
the following work and activities under general construction and specialized
construction activities for buildings and civil engineering works which includes:
new work, repair, additions and alterations, erection of prefabricated buildings or
structures on the site, and construction of a temporary nature.

The development of the City Engineering Office – Dapitan City into its
present structure underwent a long process of evolution spanning a decade of

colorful and significant events in laying the groundwork for the physical foundation
of the city.

Vision:
A tourism paradise in the Philippines with a better quality of life for the
empowered Dapitanons through a sustainable socio-economic development efforts
with a peaceful and sound environment guided by a dynamic and pro-active
leadership.

To pursue and sustain programs, projects and activities that will ensure the
improvement of the quality of life of the Dapitanon including delivery of basic
services of the government to the grassroots level of the community which is the

4. Workplace Logo and Its Meaning
The design conveys the idea of Filipino
engineering excellence with sub-themes such as the fine
craftsmanship of Filipino design engineers, architects
and the whole field of engineering profession,
competence and integrity. The most noticeable is the
gear frame which is completely circular. The gear
represents motion, transmission and direction towards
the common man’s economic and social upliftment. The
perpetual motion of the circular gear seeks unity of
effort, unity of direction and unity of the diverse components of the public works
and highways functions and responsibilities. Within the gear frame, the highway
stretches northward and merges to an infinity, cutting through and against the
backdrop of a doric column. The doric column is the symbol of the building and
construction industry. The term “against the backdrop” and while the highway cuts
through the doric column, it does not convey divisiveness but instead conveys that
the road stretches to infinity complemented hand-in-hand by the prosecution of
the public works projects represented by the doric column. This denotes unity of
objectives and unity of efforts.

The workplace rules and regulations are based on civil service law according
to PRESIDENTIAL DECREE No. 807 (PD807) “Providing for the organization of the
civil service commission in accordance with provisions of the constitution,
prescribing its power and functions and for other purposes.” The Constitution
provides for organization of a Civil Service Commission which shall establish a
career service and adopt measures to promote morale, efficiency and integrity in
the government service.

3. Work Immersion Highlights


On the first day of Immersion, we have a Pre-Deployment Orientation. We
met the City Administrator Hon. Wilberth G. Magallanes for a short discussion
about work immersion. In the afternoon, Engr. Robert Sy discussed about project
in Sitio Napuyan, Brgy. Aseniero, Dapitan City. The project was about about
Proposed Construction of Material Recovery Faculty with Water Treatment Facility.
On the next day, we were given an activity to analyze the site development plan
about Proposed Construction of Material Recovery Faculty with Water Treatment
Facility by division (Buffer Lagoon, Aerobic Fond, Constructed Wetlands,
Monitoring Pond, Leaching Field and Filter Pond.) We computed the area of site
development plan by division.
On the other day, Engr. Sy discussed about Civil engineering formulas and
principles and we, the immersionists, take down notes. That day was really
challenging. The formulas were so very difficult. On the following day, we were
given again an activity to analyze the site development plan about the area in the
Brgy. Cawa-Cawa, Dapitan City. We have to compute the post with a vertical bar
of 12mm and a round bar of 10mm. We, with my co-immersionist Ryan Dave B.
Gumop-as, found it really difficult. Engr. Sy expected that we have a lot of
knowledge in the field of engineering. After that, he found out that we are still
senior high school students with the help of Engr. Evelyn Cabilin. Next, we
researched and discussed on how to use autocad software and we asked our head
about the functions of the Construction Division, the process and their prime
target. And last, we continued gather information about the formulas needed in
computing and solving problems related to engineering. After that, we took a
group picture with our head and have a courtesy exit.

School and Work Immersion: A Comparison and Contrast


Essay
The difference between school and work immersion is their time. Well, time
can be relative, but in direct comparison to each other, work obviously takes a
longer time than school! Furthermore, students have a lot more break times than
workers. Workers can take breaks as they see fit, but if they’re being observed to
take one too many it creates a bad impression for their superiors. So people try to
look busy and not look like they’re taking a break when they are. Second is subject.
As a student, you have several subjects to study over the course of a day, with
usually the same amount of time. As a worker, most of the time you don’t get to
do enough of an aspect of the job that you enjoy doing but you get more than
enough of what you don’t like to do! And they’re never for a set amount of time.
The next one is responsibility. Since a student doesn’t get paid to study,
ultimately the only responsibility s/he has is for him or herself. Your parents can
try to motivate you by means of encouragement or threats, but whether you pass
or fail, the glory or shame is yours alone. It would also take a lot to get you kicked
out of school. At work, because you are paid, you have to take some amount of
responsibility, failing which you will earn some talking-to from your boss
(depending on how nice s/he is) and the guilt that you are not worth the amount
being paid. You might also cause further work for your colleagues to pick up after
your mess. Talk about a guilt trip. And last but not the least, is friends. You can
make friends more easily in school, and there are so many people to choose from!
At work, of course you have to make friends with your colleagues, but the point
of work is work. So you can’t devote as much social time as you would at school
to hang out with your friends than you could at work. Even if you’re a quick worker
and get your job done fast, you might be disturbing your colleague if you pop over
his or her desk to chat one too many times throughout the day. For students, they

have more time to be with their friends after school if they choose to. Workers
sometimes socialize after working hours, but more often than not they don’t
because they want to be home with their families.
School and work immersion have similarities in at least few ways. First,
both require an early start. Going to work requires getting up early to avoid the
traffic rush, and going to school requires getting up early to be assured of a parking
space. Second, promptness is important in both places. Being at work on time
pleases the employer; being in class on time pleases the instructor. Third, both
work and school benefit society.

Work Immersion Experiences Reflection Paper


During my work experience at City Engineering Office (CEO) Construction
Division, I was fortunate enough to have experienced firsthand and learned, many
different sides of what goes into a project, the general process of how a project is
initially planned, developed and completed; as well as how much work and detail
goes into every stage. Another valuable lesson I have learned during these week
were the many different types of work an Engineer has to perform, which in turn,
have provided me with more insight into the different types of roles and
responsibilities that I could perform, as a Civil Engineer.
Reflecting back to my first day at City Engineering Office (CEO) Construction
Division, it was one of the most memorable days of my time at work. After being
introduced to everyone, I was handed a tender to work on, in which they had
asked me for recommendations to improve certain aspects of the project wherever
I see fit, as well as my opinions on the project as an entirety. They were very open
and happy for me to contribute as much as I wanted to, and were open to any
suggestions and ideas. This instantly made me feel comfortable and definitely
made me feel as though I was part of the team.
During the first week of work completing the tender, I was overwhelmed by
the work and the responsibilities that were placed on me, but with the help of my
supervisors and the directors, who have had years of experience in the industry, I
felt more confident and supported as I knew my work would be double checked
and any uncertainties were explained. By observing and learning from them, I
managed to pick up tips and learned different types of skills, from learning to
communicate, to reading and deciphering many different types of plans.
Overall, my work experience at City Engineering Office (CEO) Construction
Division was positive. I was very happy with the amount of things that I have
learned and experienced in a week of being a Student Engineer with the
government. I believe that Jose Rizal Memorial State University should keep this
aspect of the Engineering course as it does provide students with the experience

needed in order to find a job later on (even if the experience is over a short amount
of time).
