Fabric – material made out from fibers

Facing – piece of fabric stitched to finish raw edges of the garment like neck hole front
and back closings, armhole and hem finishing. It is turned to the wrong side of
the garment, basted or zigzag
Fashion – the current mode of dress shown to the magazines worn by models and become
the sought after garments of people
Fastener – a device which permits opening or closing of a garment
Felting – method of fabric construction where wool or fur is compressed through the
action of heat, moisture, chemicals and pressure without spinning, weaving or
heating
Fibers – raw material from which clothe is made
Filling – crosswise yarn in fabric
Finish – a treatment of a seam or raw edge in such a manner as to prevent from raveling
Fly – left and right placket where zipper or buttons are attached in a garment
Fray – to ravel
Garment / Clothing – already sewed material to be worn over the body
Garment bias – bias that make a 45 degree angle between true bias and lengthwise and
crosswise grain
Girth – measurement around the largest part of the upper arm
Grain – the direction in which the threads of a fabric run
Good fit – the garment is appropriate to the persons figure
Hand worked Buttonhole – type of buttonhole where the edge is finished with hard
stitches
Hem – the fold of pants, skirts, blouse sand sleeves ant the bottom which is 1” width. It is
done under the wrong side of the garment.
Hemline – the line that indicates where the hem will be turned
Interfacing – fabric that helps shape and give body to collars, buttonholes, lapels,
waistband and cuffs
Ironing - the back and forth motion of an iron over fabric to remove wrinkles
Knitting - method of fabric construction through the interlacing of a yarn or yarns in a
series of connected loops by means of hand or machine needle
Lace making – method of fabric construction by knotting and looping or twisting yarns
together to form a light, open cloth, incorporating pattern
Lengthwise grain – it is parallel to the selvage of the fabric. It is also called warp
Lock stitch – stitch done to lock the opening end of a pocket or placket. It is also called bar
tack
Macrame Making – method of fabric construction where a variety of knots are created to
join the cords at different intervals
Machine Operation – start the machine by moving the needle to make stitches and seams
Maintenance – keeping the equipment in good condition
Mannequins – a dress form where garments are fit. It is also known as dress form of male
or female
Neatness – characterized by smooth and well proportioned shape in relation to other parts
Net making – method of fabric construction by knotting and looping a continuous strand
into open
Notch - a V-shape mark at the center of pattern pieces to indicate matching location along
seam line
Objectives – it pertains to classifying a critical thinking
Operation – the process of using energy into action
Operating the machine – Putting the machine in motion to sew
Patch – a piece of material attached to the right side of a garment
Pattern – a representation of usually half of a garment cut from pattern paper to be used as
a guide in cutting out the fabric
Pelon – a synthetic fabric used for interfacings
Perpendicular line – two lines meeting at right angle
Pivot – sewing and turning to the corner by leaving the needle on the fabric
Placket – a finished opening in a garment made for convenience in putting on and taking off
the garment
Pleat – a fold of fabric over a fabric. This provide controlled fullness in a garment
Pliable – easily follow the shape
Pressing - the lifting and lowering motion of an iron used with seam to smooth and shape
the garment during construction
Pucker – undesirable fold or wrinkles done in fabric while sewing
Ravel – loose threads at the raw edge or cut edge of fabric
Raw edge – cut edge of fabric
Recycling – process of making something from an old article or of finding new uses of old thing
Remnants – left over pieces of cloth
Resourcefulness – good of thinking of ways to do
Rise – taken from the waist down between the legs. Also called crotch measurement.
Rubric – assigning value to indicate the objectives rating of an individual performance
Seam – the stitching that joins two or more edges of fabric
Seam allowance – spaced added between the cut edge and stitching line of the fabric
Seam finishing – the treating of the raw edge of a garment to give a finished appearance
Seam line – line indicating where the seam should be stitched
Selvage – it is the finished edge of the fabric
Sewing equipment – refers to all the tools, materials and equipment that are indispensable in
clothing construction
Slash – to cut through
Stay stitching – stitching within the seam allowance to keep edges of the fabric from stretching.
Stitch – an in and out passage of thread through a fabric in sewing
Stitch line – a continuous line by tracing the edge of the pattern
Tailoring – the process of making man’s garments
Techniques – the manners or skills applied by which work is to be done
Threading – the process of pulling thread to the sewing machine from the spool pin, passing
through the succeeding parts until it passes
Technical expertise – pertains to specialized skills in clothing construction
Texture – the stiffness, coarseness, roughness or softness of the fabric
Technology – process of matching together the parts to finish a product
Top stitch – to stitch on top and even distance from a seam edge of fold showing on the right side
Trim – to cut off allowance to reduce bulkiness. It is also cutting of excess thread
Under stitching – stitching to keep the facing from being seen on the right side of the garment
Waistband – it is a band encircling the waist with interfacing
Warp – lengthwise grain of a fabric
Woof – crosswise grain of the fabric
Workmanship – quality of work
Yoke – a shaped part of garment that holds other parts together
