Means of Livelihood
The primary sector is the major source of livelihood in SCM. Crop production is the
most pervasive, but this is also complemented by livestock, poultry and aquaculture or
fisheries.
The secondary sector pertains to the trade of finished products derived from the
primary sector. These include wholesale and retail trade, manufacturing, construction,
and supply of electricity, gas and water.
According to the records of the city, there are about 15 firms that are engaged in
manufacturing related activities. Apart from manufacturing related firms, there are also
construction firms within the city. Currently, the recorded number of these firms amount
to 29. These are distributed within the city. However, most of these are concentrated in
the Poblacion area.
SCM’s tertiary sector also contributes to the growth of the local economy.
Currently, there are about 1,693 establishments, which employs 2,494 Muñozonians.
Services provided by these establishments range from transportation and
communication, finance, and personal and community-related services.

Principal Crops/products
In the most recent data that was gathered by the Development and Planning office,
states that its aggregated total production of major crops for the wet and dry season (i.e
rice, garlic, and onion) amounts to 116,201 (MT).
For the wet season, the aggregated volume of production from both irrigated and
nonirrigated rice production areas reached 46,660.99 metric tons. This significantly rose
during the dry months to 69,540.08 metric tons, consisting of 98% (68,276.04 MT) of rice
and two percent (2%) 1,264.04 MT of other major crops.
In addition, vegetables such as bitter gourd (ampalaya), ladies’ fingers (okra),
musk melon, among many others are produced alongside major crops (Table 4.2). Figure
4.1 shows an agricultural field in Barangay Bical.
The residents of the Science City of Muñoz also engage in various types of
livestock production, the most prolific of which is the native chicken in terms of backyard
raisers. Although the data is incomplete, broilers seem to be the most prolific
commercially based on the number of raisers (Table 4.6). These livestock raising facilities
are scattered throughout the various barangays of SCM where the most heads (broiler
chicken) are found in Barangay Villa Nati with 76,000. The largest facility in terms of area,
on the other hand, spans 6 hectares, and is located at Barangay Mangandingay.
Also, there are inland fishing ground, which has a total production of 233.1 metric
tons (MT) in 2016 (Table 4.10). The aforementioned yield is estimated to generate
earnings of around PHP 17 million. Aquaculture in SCM has the highest production in
the city’s inland fishing ground in 2015, generating a total of 229.3 MT/ha.
