2. REFERENCE DOCUMENTS:
IS 383
IS 269-2015
3. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:
OR
4.1 Brick trowel: Used to pick up mortar and to spread it to an even thickness in
preparation for the laying bricks. It can also be used for trimming and rough
cutting of the brick
Brick Trowel
4.2 Plumb rule: another name of sprit level, used to establish plumb line and the
level line (Horizontal and vertical)
Sprit level
Spirit Level

WORK
5.7.2 Mortars shall be specified by proportion. Volumetric mixing shall be based on dry
volumes of each gradient. For convenience, measurement shall correspond to volume
of one cement bag i.e. 0.035 cum. Boxes shall be of size 40 × 35 × 25 cm. These shall
be marked on mortar mixing boxes by red paint and shall be used throughout the
project. Hand mixing or mechanical mixing proportion shall be done with use of these
boxes.
5.7.3 Hand mixing: The measured quantity of sand shall be leveled on a clean
masonry platform and cement bag emptied on top. The cement shall be thoroughly
mixed dry by being turned over and over, backwards, several times till the mixture
obtain uniform colour. Then the dry mix shall be mixed with required quantity of water to
bring the mortar to stiff paste of necessary working consistency.
5.7.4 Precaution: The prepared mortar shall be used within 30 minutes, after the water
is added to the dry mixture.
5.8 WORKMANSHIP:
5.8.1 Bricks shall be laid in English bond unless otherwise specified.
5.8.2 The verticality of the walls and horizontality of the course shall be checked very
often with plumb bob and sprit level.
5.8.3 to achieve better result and proper working, the following tools shall be available
with mason working at site.
1) Sprit level.
2) Wooden/Aluminum straight edge 3 m long.
3) 3 m steel tape.
4) Plumb.
5.9 STEPS
Step 1: Start by putting a brick down at each end where you want the wall to go
Steps 1
Steps 2: Measure the bricks and how long they are. For example, if the brick is 9 5/8
inches long, then you would measure down and mark a few marks at 10 inch intervals.
Add about 3/8 of each inch onto the length of the bricks to compensate for the mortar in
between the bricks called “joint”

6.1.1 The bricks, when tested in accordance with the procedure lay down IS: 3495 (part
1): 1992 shall have a minimum average compressive strength for class 50.
7. SAFETY CONCERNS:
PPE’s (should be used by workers
Safety net should be install along with scaffolding.
Proper scaffolding should be install by competent workmanship.
Ground areas should protect from free fall of objects.
