UNIT-I 8 Hours

Fundamental Concepts:
Introduction to Bioengineering, Biochemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Sources of
Biomedical Signals, Basic medical Instrumentation system, Performance requirements of medical
Instrumentation system, use of microprocessors in medical instruments, PC based medical
Instruments, general constraints in design of medical Instrumentation system & Regulation of
Medical devices. Bioelectrical Signals & Electrodes: Origin of Bioelectric Signals,
Electrocardiogram, Electroencephalogram, Electromyogram, Electrode-Tissue Interface,
Polarization, Skin Contact Impedance, Motion Artifacts.
UNIT-II 6 Hours
Electro – Physiological Measurements
Electrodes –Limb electrodes –floating electrodes – pregelled disposable electrodes - Micro, needle
and surface electrodes – Amplifiers: Preamplifiers, differential amplifiers,

UNIT-III 8 Hours
Cardiovascular System and Measurements: The heart and cardiovascular system, ECG, blood
pressure and its measurement, respiration and pulse rate, characteristics and measurement of blood
flow meter, cardiac output, heart sounds and its measurement. Pacemaker, defibrillators,
UNIT-IV 8 Hours
Nervous System: Action potential of brain, brain wave, Instrumentation – Electro
encephalography (EEG), analysis.
UNIT-V 6 Hours
Bio Telemetry: Biomedical Telemetry & Telemedicine: Wireless telemetry, single channel
telemetry, multi-patient telemetry, implantable telemetry and telemedicine.
